Thermal compound method?

Im using a v8 cm cooler, and a i5 2500k.
v8 comes with some thermal paste, none applied, can I just do the grain of rice method, put on the v8 and then I can just start using my computer and let the heat spread it out over time? Also, can somebody help my out on my thread phantom case and fans for cooling? thanks.
