THERMAL COMPOUND CPU INSTALL

Hello,
Got my MoBo and my 3500+ retail package, but haven't been able to figure out how much, and how to apply IF NEEDED thermal grease between the CPU and the retail Heatsink. Please help me with this, can't wait to get my rig up and running.

BTW already got Artic 5 thermal grease, really don't know if its good or not . . .

Do I need or not to add thermal compound??

Grain of rice, apparently, just put about that much and then spread it out with a credit card until you have a VERY thin layer ontop of the CPU.

You need to use the thermal grease at all times and Arctic Silver is a very good brand so use that. I know there is a guide on how to apply the paste so I would google it.

I just read in Sharkyextreme that retail CPU come with thermal paste preinstalled so there's no need to use thermal grease. PLEASE People Help ME: In this case is neccesary the grease, is this correct???

Don't be too afraid to apply this stuff but just remember if you put too much, you'll clog up the CPU socket and nothing will work😉. J/K

You purchased the retail version. The heatsink in the retail version has a thermal pad attached to it, therefore you do NOT need to use thermal grease. Turn the heatsink over and look underneath it. You should see a very thin substance applied to the bottom of the heatsink. That's the thermal pad and is all you need. The heatsink is ready to be installed right out of the box.

Using thermal grease in addition to a thermal pad is not recommended and could damage the processor. AMD's "official" stand on this is to advise against using thermal grease anyway, as it dissipates over long-term use.
