Thermal compound + AMD processors

Does a thermal pad/compound come on retail versions of AMD processors? I just got mine and I can't tell if the square on the heatsink is a thermal pad.

should be a pad, white or gray. see if you can sink your fingernail into it...if its too hard to do that, its not a thermal adhesive...

QFT. make sure you clean the heatsink with something appropriate, for example, high grade isopropyl alcohol.

The only time I'd reccomend AS5 is if you're overclocking, otherwise it's not even worth the effort. AMD's pads are of astounding quality(just try seperating the HSF and CPU, it's like they're super-guled) and are more than enough for most users.

ya if you are OCing so much that you need as5, you shouldn't use the stock heatsink in the first place 🙂

If not a thermal pad, then what were you thinking it could possibly be?

I agree that there is no need to use AS5 (or anything else other than the stock pad) if not OC'ing.

thermal pad. I removed it using paint thinner and then finished it up with 91% isopropyl alcohol then air dried it. Applied some AS5 and...... Voila!!!! Stable at 37C idle but it goes up to 47C-48C loaded. I wonder why?It should be 44-46C. Any comments?

Too much AS5 applied? Inaccuracies in the temp reading? Not enough airflow in the case? Don't worry about it, it's only 2 frickin degrees!?

I guess I can buy the exhaust fan that can be attached at the bottom of the PCI-E card and convert the one near the cpu from exhaust to intake. Does anybody know where the thread about the memory sticks where the cheaper is compared to the expensive ones? That was Zebos' thread and I was looking for it.
