There's no such thing as a small problem in top fuel

Top Fuel scares the crap out of me. I'd rather spend 5 hours at Mid-Ohio wheel to wheel rather than sitting on what is basically a 300mph bomb. 😛

Those are some wild crashes. In the video at 2:33 the rear tire launches into the air and appears to stay there for 14 seconds....that is wild, the car comes to a halt a few seconds before the tire hits the track.

Honestly, I'd be a bit nervous even attending an event. Look at how far some of those tires flew. :Q

That's why most stands are at the beginning of the track and not at the end. Less of a chance of a part hitting you at FULL speed.

I used to be in the NHRA tech group, and have worked the 'Top End' recovery as well as being the launch observer at the starting line.

You cannot imagine the sensation of standing 10 feet behind those cars when they burnout, and then when they race.
In the stands a spectator can feel the wave of sound as the car passes, at the line it's just a sound and pressure overload.
A friend of mine was positioned next to Herbert's TF when it's engine blew - like a bomb, he said it made his bones ring.

Here's another video like that, not as good though:

I was working Top End Recovery when Witt Bazemore had that Funny Car fire (3:27 mark)
and was just over the wall, maybe 8 feet from where he went by . .
The heat was tremendous, the grass apron looked like dried tea where is went over it.
Quite a burn-down.

Some of those other incidents I was in attendance, in some official capacity.

mmmm nitromethane.... nothing comes close to the chills you get when you feel the ground give away under your knees when those things start up 50 feet away from you. And the watering eyes... 😕

The rotating assembly in those things is so strong that the engine could blow apart and the crank, rods, and pistons will go flying 100 feet into the air still rotating and making horsepower lol.
