Close off the area as much as possible to keep the cats out. I doubt he'll find a way out unless there's another hole or gap between the studs. Just try hammering real loud on toward the ceiling and see if the noise will scare him out of the hole.... Don't try smoke, he's not going to crawl toward the smoke....
