The wife and I saw this tonight. It was what I expected and more. I thought it was a fantastic movie, and what everyone says about DDL's acting is correct. He did an outstanding job.

My only complaint is that I didn't find the character of Eli/Paul to be convincing enough. I think they would have been better picking an unknown actor for that role.

the preview I saw for it in the theatre made it look fucking retarded. However, I looked it up on imdb when I got home and it looks fairly decent, so I'll probably give it a look see.

I saw it with a friend who got me really hyped up for it. I must say, it didn't meet the expectations I had, but it wasn't bad. The pacing was a little off I thought and I wasn't a big fan of the soundtrack.

So, I have to ask the question, is the writer/director making any statements about our present-day situation?

to answer your question, no. The movie really focuses on the heyday of oil drilling in Texas and the corruption there... not really about oil today.

Amazing movie .... shades of Citizen Kane, and DDL knocks it out of the park with that performance. Even those who don't like Paul Thomas Anderson will like this movie, as it's the best character study in a long time.

I disagree completely. I think Paul Dano should get Best Supporting Actor!

I saw it and liked it, but DDL is pretty much just impersonating John Huston in the whole film. It's still a very impressive performance, but he's hardly reinventing the wheel. Overall I really enjoyed the film but would still give the nod to No Country For Old Men as an overall artistic accomplishment.

the movie was eerily immersing. from the sets to the character study, it was gripping and had me in that place at that time. total escape from reality. though some of the dialogue carried on a bit too long.

I liked No Country For Old Men better

but this has been a rollercoaster ride... the pacing is off beat but you just need to focus on DDL and you are golden

if you aren't used to pt anderson, you probably wont like it. he doesn't follow formulas at all (although this is probably his most straight forward film to date). and i don't know how anyone could say this movie is boring (but i never get bored in movies, so maybe im weird)

Whaaat? Your way wrong. Rarely ever is there a movie thats just about a time, and has no meaning or underlying moral lesson. Those movies are made by Rob Zombie, and Robert Rodriquez.
I think the metaphor is actually religious. Something about how Money>God. Wealth and prosperity, and the greed for it has brought out the worst in humans. This is most evident in the preacher, whos own greed throughout the film grows and grows, and eventually leads to his own death. Wealth killed religion.

I want to see this one, but I'm not paying $15 for a DVD that comes in a paper flip case.

Just watched it. The title was spot on for our household. The movie was so horrible that I wanted to gouge my eyes out.

Thought it was pretty good, mostly due to DDL's performance though.

That scene in the church was awesome... "I am a sinner!!" "I've abandoned my child" and then when Eli asked him if he accepts the Lord as his savior the way he shouted "Yes I do!!!" was truely unique

One question I have though.. Were Eli/Paul actually twins, or did he lie about that part? Like was it one brother or were there actually two?
