My sister and I both read it when we were younger, I was in elementary school, so about 15 or so years ago.

It was a sci-fi book, involving this girl on a space ship. The ship was, to the best of my recollection, a civilian transport of some kind, people going from Point A to Point B. The name Cat's Cradle sticks out in my head as well, I cannot recall if that was the name of the book or the name of the ship (or both). I also recall there being a mystery of some kind involving a cat, and aliens.

I know, this is crazy fuzzy, but I really want to find it again, and get a copy of it for my nieces.

It was almost certainly a Scholastic Award winner. I think I bought it at a school book fair and the rule in my parent's house was that the only books we could buy at the book fairs were award winners.
