There was a freeware program to manage your finances.

I kinda sorta somehow remember someone in this forum mentioning a piece of software that you can use to manage your finances. Anyone know what it is? I am looking to get my ass together after paying off debt, and would love to chart everything nicely, and maybe export to graphs and stuff.

A paid program would be nice also, and some integration with bank websites (is that even possible?) would be a plus.

Anyone know what I am talking about?

BTW - I am getting deeper in the "black" as more and more time flies by. 🙂

mint.com or yodlee.com for an online solution (I know that MS Money uses Yodlee for automatic online updates).

GnuCash for a free / open source option.

Oh man. I am usually a fan of open source, but something about choosing an o/s product to manage my finances scares the hell out of me. :Q

Give it a try. All it costs is some time. If it doesn't work, go to plan B.

😕

That makes no sense at all. Since it IS open source, if you had some fear it was uploading your financial information to some random server, you could easily open up the source code and see for yourself.

If anything, it's closed source applications you should be more fearful of.

That said, paranoia about either one is unwarranted.

Good point. I have downloaded it and am giving it a try now. 🙂

There are others, but that is definitely the best bang for buck.

I am unable to find this deal -- is it a B&M deal only?

Probably. This was 2006 though. Haven't found a reason to upgrade.

I think you are thinking about mint.

That was it. Thx. I'd probably go Microsoft Money though, now that it has been mentioned.

I have had MS Money fatally fail on my with 3 seperate versions. I won't ever use it again.

I've been using the MS Money demo for a couple of weeks. At first it worked perfectly and did everything I wanted it to do. Then I ran into some issues. It stopped working with ING Direct, even though I made sure I had entered answers for every question accurately (verified this on ING's website). It simply won't work, and when I click on the message I get when it fails (I forget what it says) it takes me to a page on Microsoft's site that is just an error message. I can live without automatic updating of my ING account, because it gets very little activity. But when I tried to download the data from ING's website manually, it added the transactions ($1000 transfer to a different account) and didn't adjust the account balance! So it still shows that I have $1000 more in the account than what I have.

Some of my other accounts have had intermittent issues automatically updating as well. None as bad as ING.

I also can't figure out how to get it to stop classifying my credit card payments as expenses. It's figuring those expenses twice - once when I charge them on the card, and once when I pay them off. That's not right.

I'd try Quicken, but they don't seem to have a demo.

Can you elaborate? I've downloaded the free trial and am liking it so far. Mint, I won't use since it seems to be read only. I am going to give cash a go in a few minutes.

mint, wesabe? and something else.. i think quicken online is free too.

if you have bank of america or american express, there are some basic finance management tools there

i've used quicken past 3 yrs and enjoying it (even though its quite bloated at times)
