There seems to be something in common between musicians, doctors, engineers etc.

A lot of the people I've seen who are good doctors or engineers are also good at something else like playing a musical instrument, writing poetry, having a keen interest in animals etc. It's just that some of these people focus on one specific aspect and become good at it. Some of them focus on a musical instrument(s) and become musicians, some of them focus on science and become doctors or engineers, some of them focus on art and become artists etc.

Now, I have no credible scientific data to back this up, but this is what I've noticed quite a bit.

Successful people have the drive and ambition to be skilled and accomplished at a lot of different things. Or you could say that having the drive and ambition to be skilled and accomplished at a lot of different things is what makes you successful.

Those who are seen as the most brilliant people of an era usually are those who are absolutely geniuses in a given specific area, or are polymaths.
You can be master of one or two things, or be very capable at doing many things. Usually leaders and decision makers aspire to have the latter, while scientists, mathematicians, engineers, and doctors pursue the former.

I'm very skilled at little and master of nothing. :(

Yes. This is what all those people who ask, "What did Steve Jobs invent himself?", do not think about.

Yeah. The company in it's infancy needed both Steve's really to begin with.
For any successful company - especially tech companies - you need both Wozniaks and Jobs.

I'm not even an Apple fan, really, but Steve Jobs, whether you like his management style or not, did a ton of work to make the company successful.
Even if he wasn't a creative genius, he knew business, how to push people, and how to get things done. He also knew how to make himself heard as an executive. Few others in the industry have done so to the same level, though you can see even now that some CEOs and other high level execs have learned from his example. You can see this by just looking at recent keynotes, like at Google I/O. Apple may or may not have invented the style, but they sure did perfect it.

I agree. I'm an engineer and I am good at playing video games.

There was this guy in my class when I was young who would do nothing but play video games. His academic performance used to be piss poor. People thought he was dumb. But when he was around 13 or 14 years old, he picked himself up and started focusing on academics. He surprised quite a few people because his academic performance soared. He graduated with an engineering degree from a decent college. Looking back, it was quite obvious that the guy had some serious potential. Even being good at playing games requires some skill.

Some people are smart and ambitious and spend their time developing skills. Others sit on their ass and watch tv all day and don't do shit. Maybe they have kids and thus don't have the opportunity to develop those extra skills. Who knows.

Others like to go around drinking beer and smoking cigarettes or whatever in their free time. And then they come crying to people us when their computer breaks or they need help with something that they never took the time to learn about.
