There is some green crap growing in my Brita Pitcher

For the past 2 weeks there is some green stuff appearing at the bottom of my brita pitcher (about 1 inch square). I've had it for 3 years and it just started happening now. I have the big pitcher with the "faucet thingy". I washed the pitcher (no dishwasher tho), but it obviously did no good.

Try some straight up bleach on it and then rinse it well after it's clean.

Bleach is unnecessary. Don't use it on something that you drink out of.

It's just algae. It's good for you. You'll get used to the slimy feeling it leaves on your tongue.



Seriously, bleach is way overkill for some algae. If you're really concerned, use some hydrogen peroxide.

Most people don't realize the power of H2O2. It can be used for everything bleach can, and it is 1000x better for you and the environment. Bleach is nasty sh!t.

The problem is that the 1-quart 3% H2O2 you find in the drug stores isn't strong enough for something like whitening your clothes, plus it's expensive, at least compared to a gallon of bleach.

Oh well.

Rinse it out well afterwards. You may want to let it soak in some water. You could even sprinkle in some baking soda to react with and neutralize what little bits of vinegar might be left floating around. After all, baking soda tastes a lot better than vinegar.

I just poured some vinegar in it. Hopefully the pitcher won't smell like vinegar after washing it.

You can use bleach just use it sparingly. A tablespoon would be enough and then just rinse well.
