There is only one way to completely destroy a hardisk without any possible concievable means of recovery!

Or you could just buy some old IBM Desk/Deathstars and they will autodestruct for you 😉

Pff, my 60GB Deathstar has been going strong for 4 years almost now. Sad thing is, my 1.5 year Maxtor just died, and it only had a 1 year warranty. It was my backup drive with all my data on it. Crap.

😀

G4tech had a section on this. SSI is 1 way(the funniest way), burning it with thermite while in the process burning down your house, or muritactic acid which will eat off ur skin. Enjoy the destruction of a hard drive!!!

Doesnt low-level format physically alter the platters and make it unreadable or something?

Low level format goes through and is supposed to raised each individual magnetic "hair" on the disk then lower it to the "0" position after it has verified the bit is functional. If a hair is not working, the HDD tells the File System to work around that bit. An ideal Low Level format wshould result in all the little "hairs" laying down to the "0" posistion, however I have heard there are ways to bring back data even from this. How I do not know.

Magnets wont do anything. Theres actually an incredibly powerful magnet inside each hard drive. So powerful that its very difficult to pull off you fridge!

and you'll have to wait 10 seconds or so until it sinks.

Of course the information is still in your head. and if losing your life is less important than losing your data, then BOTTOMS UP!

just make sure to shoot yourself in the head before landing. you dont want to roast in the lava! because that would be stupid. and for this make sure your pistol aint gonna fail.

this is a great way to go if you dont want to leave a single trace of your existence on this planet.

:sun::sun:

Here is what I do:

  1. Perform 2 DoD Hard Drive Wipes using the ultimate boot cd
  2. Get a heavy duity plug in drill with a half inch drill bit
  3. Put several (6-8) swiss cheese holes in the platters
  4. Use a chop saw with an abrasive cutting wheel used for rebar and then I slice the drive in to two pieces and discard them in two differant landfills
  5. take them to a car crushing place so they can shash it to pieces then drop it in the shreadder

[*]Step Five is completely optional.

What exactly is so important that you have to make a thread about it? Degauss it at your work if its that important or use a magnet. Obviously a sledge hammer will work also. There is only like one hard drive recovery center here in the USA, and its going to cost like 50k+ for someone to recovery it. If someone wants to do it themselves, its like 200k worth of equipment...So with that being said, if its just porno, sledge hammer is a most economic solution.

I give up finding the video from 60mins but here's a link to an article here

Quote from cbsnews:

But New York City?s Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says the .50-caliber rifle is in a class by itself. He agreed to show 60 Minutes just how powerful the .50 caliber is.

First, a police sharpshooter fired the NYPD?s own .30 caliber sniper rifle at a steel target. Downrange, three football fields away, the three shots from the .30 caliber rifle bounced off the half-inch thick steel.

"You can see it hasn?t penetrated it," says Kelly.

Then the sharpshooter fired three rounds from a Barrett .50-caliber rifle at the same target.

"Went right through," says Kelly. "It is clearly a weapon of war, a round to be used in a wartime situation. It?s appropriate for the military. The effective range is about 2,000 yards. It?s a very formidable weapon."

555 views. not bad.

so in the end its just simple. a good software for data wiping is sufficient for scenarios where actual confiscation of your physical hardrive will not take place. just make sure your wiping out the data before someone bugs your computer. because they can either take the information before you destroy it, or, if they are professionals, they can trick you by producing decoy screens showing you that your data is being wiped when really its just a fake.

and if someone plans on retrieving your disk, and if you have managed to prevent that someone from bugging your computer or seeing whats on it before you intend on destroying it, then throw it in the volcano.

simple solutions by xmax talking to himself

Let the hard drive run against Hilary for the 2008 Democratic nomination.
Better yet, make it a HardDrive- Dennis Kucinich ticket.
