I will admit that the original STALKER had problem that needed to be corrected severely...and they weren't without the help of mods. Many mods have promised the incredible atmosphere and original STALKER game design but have fallen short. LURK is the closest I have ever gotten to what I wanted STALKER to be and it all starts off with the stealth. You can hide, flank, disappear, use the night as cover and enemies and allies alike DO NOT have super vision, if you're not lit up or making noise and you're using silenced weapons or your knife, they won't be able to find you. You can kill in the Bar and the Freedom base and still be hidden...so long as you're good enough.

God, I'm in the village where you fight the blood suckers and it's the most ungodly situation drenched in atmospheric dread. There's rain, thunder, and lightning, some poor bandit heard my grenade which took two bloodsuckers out and wandered into the village at midnight through the rain. He looks around trying to figure out what happened as I watch him through the window, crouched. I try to flank him but he apparently heard a bloodsucker come and wasn't prepared, poor sod never saw it coming. I was well hidden from the strong powerful creature, so I uncorked the silencer from my AK and took some shots at the beast. It got pissed off at me and ran in the house. He went to the house I was in, but it was too late, I snuck up right behind him in pitch dark and put 30 bullets into him. He smelled like gun powder and looked like swiss cheese. This is my mod and I will not play with any other mod for STALKER anymore. The stealth alone is light years beyond any other mods supposed fake-y stealth. Play it, you'll see STALKER in a brand new light, I gave up STALKER years ago, but w/ LURK, I wonder where I ever would have been without it!

Sounds interesting, I might play it some and see how it goes.

What I'm doing is living in the atmosphere and only rarely going to purchase things. It makes things really hard and you truly feel like a scavenger. The nights are intense for me as the lightning crackles through the windows and I walk around with my silenced pistol w/ only 40 shots. I can take down a bandit with a headshot if I'm close enough, but a higher level stalker isn't felled so easily. I just play it as hard as possible and like a real and truly stealthy person. Looking from cover and hiding in the dark, mutants are sparse but strong and not easy to take down w/ just the weapons I have on hand. All of this turns the game into a high levels of atmosphere and really bring out the shine of STALKER.

PS. And NO NIGHT VISION! NV ruins the atmosphere so much that I just can't bring myself to use it.

Would this be recommended for a STALKER first-time playthrough?

i wouldn't.

My first time STALKER playthrough lasted about 30 minutes. When I realized that I couldn't hit a target @ 50m with an AK47 I moved on. Later I heard that most mods fix the weapons. If I were to try it again I would use mods.

Try an AK-74, the full length one (not the shortened AKS74U). Better accuracy, at least in real-life thanks to the move to 5.45x39mm.

Use Oblivion Lost for a first-time play-through. But, I do not know of about this mod.

How does it compare to OL?

You do know what the 'shots fired to kill' ratios were for WWII, or even the modern era, right?

Though in terms of gameplay, that might not be the best design decision.

Oblivion Lost, or it's equivalents, do kick butt on the vanilla version. OL modifies some things in ways I don't care for, but it is great experiance.

Yeah I will be trying Oblivion Lost once I get my comp back up and running. Like Ataru said, the atmosphere of L.U.R.K. is just amazing. I enjoyed playing it but I couldn't finish it due to my card overheating. Ugh.

This, and the performance mod that makes it run better. The one the guy tweaked for the .ltx file. Damn. I've played through this game 3x. One of the best games I've ever played. Makes me want to run through it again but I've sold it.

Yeah, we both have the same problem. For some reason the graphics are so cranked on this mod that your GFX card will overheat. I can only play in intervals now, but man it's the way to play. Sneaking inside houses and avoiding their lights makes for frantic and extremely enjoyable gameplay as you watch their lights shining through the cracks of wood and metal. They even give up searching for you and sometimes can't find you if you hide well enough.

PS. Also the one thing I want to see happen the most is to merge LURK w/ the Lost Alpha mod! That would be insane, tons of free cutout levels mixed w/ the LURK atmosphere would be incredible!

Might as well bring this up since it's such a great deal and all. STALKER is now $5 on Steam, perfect for getting the game then getting LURK!

http://store.steampowered.com/app/4500/

I bought the game last night through Steam and then installed the STALKER Complete 2009 1.4 Release Mod and had a lot of fun playing for about two hours last night.

I am just getting into it, but as there are a number of mods out there, is there one that is best for a first play though?

Funny, you just brought this mod up. I discovered it over at FW. It's supposed to be fantastic. The screenies sure do look purdy.

I am also looking for the answer to this question. Does vanilla STALKER have too many bugs or problems?

Most of the hard core players agree that even the last patched version of the game has problems. The mod community for the game, however, has really been active and has addressed the original version's flaws to a great extent. The best mods have put a real labor of love into not only fixing bugs but also modifying some aspects of the game play and significantly improving the visual and sound imagery.

I played the original version for about fifteen minutes before applying the Complete 2009 mod and there was a significant change for the better in the graphics and the audio character of the game. After two hours of play I saw some visual anomalies but can't be sure if they are mod or original version related.

I will probably stick with the mod I installed as it is playing well for me, but would love to hear from anyone who has played with the different mods and had a chance to compare.
