I have upgraded to Win2K from all versions of Win9X and WinME without a problem. Something doesn't sound right. Any other details possibly?

You qualify for the Win2K Pro upgrade price if you can prove during installation that you own a copy of Win98 or 95. I think the upgrade does not work with Win3.1 or earlier. Its all about money. If you have not paid a hefty Microsoft tax in a while then you will, or you will pirate, share in other words steal the intellectual property. Try visiting the Microsoft website and research the upgrade qualifications there. Go see http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/guide/professional/pricing/default.asp

The answer was always there. You just had to take the time to look.

Remember that winME is based off of the same 9x kernel that 95 and 98 were built on....2K, however, was developed from the NT kernel of NT4.0 (and 3.51). Different kernel, effectively an entirely different OS (ie, you wouldn't be upgrading anyways...but replacing everything about the OS that actually makes a difference).

In any case, changing between operating systems is a good time for a reformat.

Just put in the win2000pro (there is no win2000, the basic one is called win2000pro) upgrade version cd, it will autorun. This works in winme.

I just did this exact thing... I used the full w2kpro version to "upgrade," not the w2kpro upgrade version. I put the CD in the drive, the autorun popped up, and everything went from there. The install program is actually pretty smart... it has a screen to download MS's "compatability tester" program, which tells you that all of your hardware and software will be incompatible with windows 2000. The only thing that I was surprised by (and I was really surprised by this) was that I checked that the box that wasn't "Clean install" b/c I thought it would result in a dual boot system, but only after the install program was significantly on its way did it say that it was deleting the old windows ME (I installed on the same partition, you may have better luck on two different partitions). But, it upgraded the registry and all the w2k compatible programs work fine in w2k now. You shouldn't see any serious problems during the install other than some of your hw or sw may be incompatible without updates.

I have triple boot, Win ME, Win 2000 Pro and Win 2000 Advanced Server and they all work really great. So I don't think dual booting will do any harm to your system.
