i'm writing this more as a vent than as anything else, and i guess my statements will be taken apart. by all means, i want your feedback anyway.
it bothers me a lot that people on ATOT get really anal about the "P&N" threads that are made in ATOT.
here's my take on this.
yesterday, someone posted about wanting to host a video about what we originally thought was 9/11 coverage. immediately, someone had to write "wrong forum."
but is it really the "wrong forum?" is 9/11 "news" at this point, or is it just a piece of our history? (and i really don't see 9/11 as "political," as long as the discussion was apolitcal.)
even without it being a 9/11 thread, i think that there is more P&N in OT than there is probably in P&N.
just because someone posts about 9/11 (which some may view as "worthwhile news") as opposed to "man's widow wins $1.875 settlement from nursing home for being bit by fire ants" doesn't mean the latter is not news.
(nobody said that this belonged in P&N now, did they? it still is very much NEWS, albeit not as publicly known as, say, 9/11.)
among other "news" threads in ATOT, you can find plenty:
guy wins $1million from home depot
dwight gooden arrested again
mario vazquez drops out of american idol
i find that these are perfectly well-suited for ATOT, although there's no mistaking that this information is considered NEWS. (and the forum is called politics AND news now, isn't it?)
do you really think that the aforementioned news stories belong in the P&N forum, which contains such threads as Looking for an Honest Socialist, Guantanamo Detainees Still Yielding Valuable Intelligence, Bush crisscrosses Red States re-inforcing Brainwashing of American Republicans 3-12-05, and Iraq parties gridlocked over terms?
i REALLY don't.
given that 9/11 was so long ago, i don't think it really has a place in P&N... nor does this thread belong in P&N. (as i said in that thread, i don't find anything outright political about that post except that the two guys are political figures.)
there's a truly blurry line between a lot that is posted in ATOT and P&N. that does not warrant personal attacks or whatever the case may be, yet some people address such posts (and responses) rather harshly. (feel free to attack what we say, but don't attack us.)
i could point out so many more threads about this, but you get my point.
