There is a slight chance that I might freeze to death tonight

Burn plastic grocery bags to keep warm. It keeps them out of the landfill so you'll be saving the planet, save money, and keep snugly warm.
🙁

Get a blanket, make some hot beverage, put your laptop in your lap. You'll be sterile in no time.

My furnace stopped working. I'm convinced that "yearly maintenance" is a euphemism for "let us break your furnance so that we can come back later in the year and charge you even more money."

I don't think that the average company would go out of their way to break your furnace so that they could up charge you more money. All appliances have a life span and they require regular maintenance.

IMHO, you should look for another company to service you furnace if you are not happy with the current company.

We've got a bad thermocouple on our furnace, so we have to light the pilot light unless we keep it toasty. Haven't even lit it yet this fall, but the past week or so has been cold. Its a bit chilly in here, says its 26F outside, but it feels warmer than it did last night and another night this week when it was supposedly warmer. Gonna have to call the landlord and tell him that he needs to get it fixed as I don't plan on running it a whole ton if we don't have to and it'd be a bit shitty to have to light it every day.
Don't be so ghetto to your family. Call the service company to service your furnace (check/clean the burner, check the safety valve assembly). Thermoccoupler should be less than $10 at the local shops, or around $25-40 for thermopile.

It's just me and my roommate, who isn't even here this weekend. I'm not going to fix it or call someone to because the landlord won't reimburse us for it (he has his own people that he has take care of things). It has not been cold enough to really need the heater on yet, so I haven't gotten around to reminding him.

It's almost 70 here in Boston right now. Not going to freeze here tonight.
just slightly above freezing over here

No furnace contract?

It's not going to help you now but from prior experience, I keep a portable space heater for emergencies in the closet.

And just what sort of emergency takes place in your closet ??? 😕

Wuss. 😛. Mine routinely died during the coldest periods of Winter. The last time it did so before it was replaced was for three days of -64F weather.

It's 46F here, but it's 77F in my room. No heater either. I guess my apartment is just well insulated.

i just woke up and found that i left the door open, it apparently got cold as fuck overnight, its like 50 in here
