jesus h christ... talk about bowl creep.

Kraft Fight Hunger (Dec. 31): Illinois (6-6) vs. UCLA (6-7)
and how does a 6-7 team go to a bowl game?!

whats next to extend the cash grab?

Because USC was on probation and UCLA was served up as the Pac 12 South Champion to the Pac 12 North Champion Oregon.

There has been at least one time where a 5-7 team played in a bowl game. They were the Sun Belt conference champions. Sun Belt has one bowl tie in and their conference champion gets it. Wow they actually have 2-3 ties in now. Ridiculous.

Half the bowls I don't even recognize anymore because they dropped their traditional name and/or change their name several times do to sponsorship changes.

A .500 team without a head coach plays a sub-.500 team without a head coach while a 7-5 team sits at home because teams that finished behind it in its own conference took the bowl spots.

Welcome to Bowl Season(!), designed to separate you from as much of your money as possible to support extravagant lifestyles for people who don't deserve them.

There does seem to be an inordinate amount of bowls these days, but when you consider 70 teams out of a total of what, 308 teams in Division 1 (or FBS or whateverthefuck they are trying to call it these days)? it's not so bad.

70/308 > quality than the joke that is the NBA, which allows 16/30 teams to compete in their joke playoffs.

The NBA playoff aren't a joke; the regular season is. Everyone knows that the NBA is completely pointless to watch until the playoffs start. (And afterward too, but that's another matter...)

308 is in basketball. In football it's 120 FBS teams. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Division_I_(NCAA)#Football_Bowl_Subdivision

As of 2011, there are 120 full members of Division I FBS

So does the nhl. Baseball is moving to, what is it, 10 teams making the playoffs? The regular season for every professional sports league has become a complete joke. Just get rid of them completely, crown the team with the best record as champs, and make some kind of champions league if you really need some kind of postseason stand-in.

the NBA has the longest, most boring, completely worthless post season imaginable. It seems that the MLB is going this route, too. 🙁

Whenever you allow better than 50% of your league into the "elite" post season club, you are doing something wrong. Especially when you consider that one of those divisions, being a joke for more than 2 decades now, has to put in several sub-.500 teams just to make their 8 team quota.

it's garbage.

and with what pyonir said, with FBS being only 120 teams qualifying for these bowls...70/120. wow.

truly pathetic.

70/120? It is more like 2/120 - only two teams qualify for a chance to play for the title. The rest of the bowl games don't matter.

well, that's a fair point.

But it used to be that the bowl games truly represented the best of the best.

I don't mind if they keep all 35 bowl games, just keep the 5? BCS bowls and turn those into a playoff bracket-maybe add a 6th.

Though, I think it should be no more than top 8 teams. Or top 9 teams, where the top 2 teams get a first round bye.

And the only one that matters is the national championship game. The rest are games for money and for what someone thinks people want to watch. It has nothing to do with how good teams are.

I really, REALLY hate how commercialism has been forced on colleges over the past few decades. I get a shitty education and it costs too fucking much besides. And I'm too old to get student loans and likely couldnt pay them off anyway.
