I saw this commercial on tv for a cereal called "Lucky Charms". This rad little dude was always running away from some skate rats who wanted to steal the cereal! Anyway, the way I figure it, the skate rats got tired of chasing the rad little dude with the cereal, and hacked Gabe's machine thinking he would have some "Lucky Charms".
When they found out he didn't, they got really pissed off and stole the code to HL2 to hold for a ransom of "Lucky Charms".

Oh well. It makes about as much sense as the original post.

I mean JEEZ!! It's like saying " my dog ate my homework ".

yeah you'd think they'd disconnect any lines connecting to the outside world on that machine.

More than one person was working on HL2, and they were working on it for years. I'm not sure if you've ever visited an office, let alone a company like Valve, but they're all networked together these days, and accessible to the internet. On hindsight, or maybe to the ignorant, they should have disconnected everybody who was working on HL2 from the network or internet, but that's just idiotic.

Let's get real, and stop slamming - Valve should never have let this happen. How much did they make from Half Life?
$ Millions? Really, these game geeks drink beer with hackers. They should have protected their code.
Ok, do these hacker kids need a life or what?
Here is my life. Hackers and negative posters, this is a real life. Take notes:
1. Develop business. (Self employed, nobody is hiring under King Bush!)
2. Keep temperamental, moody sexy girlfriend happy (a full time job - and not what you just thought!)
3. Go to Nascar Craftsmen Truck race on Saturday here in the D/FW metroplex. (Nascar rules!)
Any male-boob having, pimple faced, Lan party going, Jolt Cola drinking nerds would get beat up by Nascar rednecks! Obviously, these thieves don't attend sporting events!
4. Clean house, cook, wash and press clothes.
5. Game on the PC!
Nowhere does "wreck other people's work" appear. What is it with these teenage pimple faced thieves?
Let's just all be cool, and love one another. And deprive hackers of their twinkies!
Cheers, Chazz

hi to those who had played the leaked beta

it seems to me the game is quite complete. the levels are somewhat inter linked, even the final battle stage is set, although the whole d3 stages are not textured.

wonder what they are waiting for.
I would just release the single player version if I were them.

That makes the most financial sense IMO, get the single player out by X-mas and release the expansion pack? or whatever it will be when they have worked out steam and the other security and cheat related issues the online element creates?

In response to Dewey who said they should just release it and then release incremental patches afterwards. I have to agree with that statement. ALL games released, wether the developer claims they're finished or not, require some type of patch afterwards. Aren't we the financial force behind all these games? I mean , really, if they said that tomorrow they would release DOOM3, HL2 and the LOOOOOONNG awaited DNF, me and another 10 million fans would be at stores camping out the night before. I would buy ALL three games, as i'm sure others would too.

Peace

<== Would buy all 3 of them today if I could. That's why I've been saying this "alpha" or whatever it is of HL2 isn't going to cut into their sales. I've played around with it for a little bit and all it did is make me want the full game even more! :)

Well, most games are funded by their publishers, so they're often forced to release the game before they wish to. And the gamers whine and complain that the game isn't finished, buggy, and requires constant fixes. Valve didn't receive any funding by the publishers, so they have complete control over the game... including when it's going to be released. They probably want to release the game in the best condition it can.

I may have jumped the gun with my post, but I believe your the stupid SOB for speaking (typing) to another member that way.
And pretty rude I might add. I hope your 12000+ posts are more than just rude and snide remarks. Then again, you might just think
that it's normal.

Thank You.

You see the irony and hypocracy of replying in that manner don't you? You sank to the same level by replying with an ad hom of your own, why not just let it go and except that some just have a caustic way of saying you should think/read first before you type? The advice is free so take it or leave it, as you will :)

it's not like they just put all the code on their website and forgot to turn off anonymous access... it was a concerted effort by the hackers. they installed keystroke monitoring software on several valve computers and seemingly used this information to access secured information.

i am not sure what to make of valve's reaction. their original statement was that it contained only 1/3 of the game and no levels. this is obviously not correct, based on the numerous reports and 'reviews' of the leaked version. this means they either intentionally deceived us, or were just too dumb to realize what was leaked.

at the same time, any gamer knows that when a game is announced to be shipping during the 'holiday season' this is a thinly veiled way of saying, summer of next year, but we hope you pre-order it so we have more guaranteed sells. you don't see a lot of games announced as 'holiday season' 2 months before the holiday season that actually make it.

i also thought the best solution was to release the single player game and have the multiplayer game as an add-on. the original half-life did not come with multiplayer out of the box and it was nonetheless one of the greatest FPS of all time.
