You're in a time of depression and you have limited food and money. You have enough food to either feed your children (no food for you), or you can feed yourself (no food for your children, you'd have to watch them starve.)
The catch is, say you know the outcome of the situation both ways. If you feed yourself, then at your job you are able to perform very well and you happen to just get a very nice promotion leading your family out of poverty.
The other outcome is that you are able to feed your children, but your lack of energy from your malnourishment causes you not to get that promotion. Which would you choose?
