theoretical networking question

i have a theoretical problem that has to be solved:

let's say there are 2 cities. both cities do not have telephone or cable lines. how would i (or a company) set up internet connection for both cities? are there companies that do this... wireless internet ... i guess it's called?

How about a dedicated data connection such as Frame Relay, (i.e. not a telephone line...data services), with local access to the Frame Relay network through a dedicated T1 line, (i.e., again it's how it's formatted, not for analog telephone use, although it can be and is used for telephone trunking when formatted for that use). Just a thought...
 
Used to work for a company who took on a project that used Lasers to transfer data btw two buildings.

If they "don't have telephone or cable lines", they probably don't have T1 lines lying around, either. 😛 I'm pretty sure the OP was interested in technologies that didn't involve potentially laying huge amounts of wire to connect to the Internet.

You might also google "MAN" or "Metropolitan Area Network" technologies. You'd need a satellite or long-range radio link (or one hard line) to connect the base station to, but then you could build a city-wide wireless network rather than laying cable to everyone's house.

Laser links obviously require line of sight, and don't work well over extremely long distances due to atmospheric haze, and fog/rain/other bad weather can knock them offline.
 
extremely short wave satellite connection. The small waves would not be interfered by nature, and the receiver/uplink would have multiple broadcasts and downloads at the same time to maximize efficiency and dependibility.
