Grabbed a bottle of this stuff on a whim. It had a gnome'ish santa clause looking fscker with a frothy pink mug on the front. How could I go wrong?

I'm assuming the "Quadrium" means it's a Quad malt...along the lines of St. Bernardus ABT 12. It tastes very similar.

PS...that is 11.5% alchyhol content...it kind of sneaks up on you.

Being the home brewer guru and resident beer expertito....what exactly makes the Belgiums the brewing geniuses that they are?

What goes into a quality quad malt vs. what goes into more basic beer like a lager or a pilsner?

drinking some affligem just now... 6.8% although youd never taste it

I think its the type of yeast, malts, hops, and etc... If it could be summed up in a post, the belgium wouldnt hold the secret?

Personally, I think its the type, belgium stick to white wheat beers, and a lot of germans do too, which is very tasty and strong, but is very different than the typically lager. So it really all depends, everyone loves different things, I love wheat beers, belgium and germany are top, but most beer drinkers (who cant tell a lager from an ale) wouldnt agree... so i guess economics determines it? Cheap lager beer will make more profits than good wheat beer?

For those of you in the know, american micro brews are making some fantastic beers these days, German beer is good, but I support america! Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA is simply one of the finest beers I have ever consumed. Hop heads rule!

Strong Ales & quintuple infinity IPAs are just a trend. America wants to be extreme, as long as somebody is watching.

Had some great Christmas beers the other night in my local bar, which specialises in Belgian beer.

Most were IRO 10-12% abv though... Hic.

My favourite 'standard' Belgian is a wheatbeer - Watou's Wit :D

Maybe, but I prefer the stuff by Cadbury's that we get here (UK).

Maybe it's what I'm used to??

Well I support Belgian-style, American ingredients beers like those brewed by Ommegang. At one time they actually brewed beer using hops grown right outside their brewhouse, but then a blight came and killed off the crop. I think now their hops are imported from Europe but other key ingredients come from across the Americas.

Well I don't know the best Belgian brands, but I know Dolfin is pretty good and you can find their chocolates at Belgian specialty shops and other retailers across the US and online.
