Yeah, people are smoking crack if they think nobody was playing HL2 before release. One of my friends, who is very well connected into the scene, had the game about a week early. Between him and a few of his other buddies they rewrote parts of the code to simulate the Steam authorization and were 1/2 way through the game at release.

Sure Valve stopped a lot of piracy, but pirate versions are still out, and they still work.

Wait until your account gets shut down for being accessed by 2 IP's at the same time.
Then see who is savvy.

BTW I only crack games for fun. I own my own copy of Hl2 so does matt. I was just looking for weaknesses in the steam software fortunatley there are lots. But I can say every game i seriously play i have purchased the onlly kinds of games that i have that aren't purchased are alpha and beta games the games you can only get before prelease

HL2 was cracked. There's a "Half-Life.2.proper.offline.no-steam.ahu" version that exists somewhere in a galaxy far far away. All you had to do was copy/paste the files and add in your steam login information in a config file. You didn't have to unlock/decrypt anything from Steam and there was a whopping 1 bug at the elevator at Black Mesa east.

I bought the game afterwards.
