[theatlantic] Why Did Susan G. Komen Pull the Plug on Planned Parenthood?

Ok, so what is the problem?

Women can go to a local health department for IUDs, pills and condoms.

The CDC and various grants fund breast cancer screening through the BCCCS program.

Just "what" do we need PP for? PP serves no purpose to our society that is not already covered by other organizations.

Since your name has "Texas" in it here is a story of a woman in Dallas doing just that...

Will this do? People at Komen are resigning over this very thing.

From the article you linked to:

Another source directly involved with Komen's management activities told me that when the organization's leaders learned of the Stearns investigation, they saw an opportunity. "The cart came before the horse in this case," said the source, who spoke to me on condition of anonymity. "The rule was created to give the board of directors the excuse to stop the funding of Planned Parenthood. It was completely arbitrary. If they hadn't come up with this particular rule, they would have come up with something else in order to separate themselves from Planned Parenthood."

Now the OP's title has been changed to reflect the story more accurately. The investigation wasn't launched so that Komen could stop funding but Komen used this as an opportunity and would have found another. That's all there is.

I will no longer support Komen because of this. Stick with your goal (fighting breast cancer), don't delve into political issues or agendas. If you're going to cut funding to some group, have the guts to say "we're cutting funding to this group and here's why", don't hide behind some bogus investigation as an excuse. That's just weak.

My GF and I have supported Komen in the past (done the walk, contributed $$), we will no longer do so, there are plenty of charities that don't delve into politics.

I never realized that only 20% of the money that Komen raises goes to research and another 20% goes to screening & research. Sounds like they use the money they raise quite poorly.

Funny how a BS politically motivated investigation is used to cut off the money (really? linking abortions to breast cancer? really? No real medical people believe that)

I mean the GOP has no interest in using politics to start a BS "investigation" that has already been proved false...they wouldn't do that, would they?

Of course, it seems that Komen sends money to Penn State, who IS under investigation for an actual real complaint.

Guess who is still getting money? Penn State.

Funny how Komen is being selective in enforcing it's rules....couldn't have anything to do with a GOP anti-PP person now could it?

So the details of Komen's slimy behavior and using the investigation as an excuse to dump PP come out, a giant sh*tstorm erupts, and now Komen backpedals in furious damage control mode.

Too late as far as I'm concerned, I won't support them anymore, they've shown their true colors.

Yes, and so much for the OP's contention that the "GOP Congress" was behind this move in the first place. 😀

Original title was correct. Mod changed it, not me. It was the congressional investigation that triggered this. Of course now it blew up in PP haters faces. 🙂 Pro lifers overreached, got smacked down hard.

Straight from the horses mouth, confirming that he Congressional investigation triggered this:
Our original desire was to fulfill our fiduciary duty to our donors by not funding grant applications made by organizations under investigation. We will amend the criteria to make clear that disqualifying investigations must be criminal and conclusive in nature and not political. That is what is right and fair.

I almost think it's worse that they reversed their decision, especially since they're still claiming it had nothing to do with Planned Parenthood, abortion, or politics.

Anyway, you can always donate directly to organizations that actually do something and skip the Komen Tax.

Maybe a more accurate statement is the GOP has their grimy hands all over this scandal

The next step should be to fire that partisan GOP hack of a VP Karen Handel and Komen can get back to being a non-partisan organization.

I'm no fan of the GOP Congress, but the original title was BS and just obscured the real story.

No, it was not correct and that's why the mod (correctly) changed it. We know the mod changed it because you'll never admit you were wrong despite a forum full of people telling you that you're wrong and look like a fool.

Straight from the horses mouth, confirming that he Congressional investigation triggered this:

For the ten thousandth time, KOMEN ENACTED THE RULE THAT FORCED THEM TO WITHDRAW FUNDING SINCE AN INVESTIGATION WAS UNDER WAY. KOMEN WAS RESPONSIBLE.

Don't get so high on your horse, the original title wasn't that far off. The investigation was directly related to PP losing funding and the GOP had their dirty hands all over this.

This is just part of a lie and smear campaign by the GOP to kill PP.

No need to yell, I get your argument, it just doesn't absolve the GOP from the consequences of targeting PP.
