The Xbox 360 to finally rejoin the world of HD?

As if it wasn't assumed that MS would eventually release a BluRay player for the Xbox 360, just a question of when.

It seems like a no brainer to me. It was the Bluray player that pushed me over the edge to buy the PS3. Had the Xbox360 had a Bluray player, I might have bought it instead.

Same, that and the RROD fiasco. Although my PS3 died on my ironically enough (it was under warranty).

I hope they do come out with a BRD addon. I would definatelty get one. I just hope it wont require an HDMI 360 as both of mine are non HDMI.

The HD-DVD add-on does not require HDMI, so I would hope and assume that a BRD add-on would not either. Although I'd prefer to have an HDMI 360. I feel like the HD-DVD add-on is a bit blurred over component, although sometimes it might just be the movie.

It does look very nice over VGA though (another option if you don't have HDMI).

MS allegedly had a blu-ray prototype last year, so this is really old non-news that xbitlabs is digging up to speculate on for a little traffic.

USB enclosure + blu drive + software decoder = "prepping external BRD design."

I still have my HD DVD drive hooked up, though I now just use it to play my son's DVDs. I wonder if the system will support daisy chaining the BD and the HD DVD drives at the same time. The dashboard would have to be modified to allow the selection of three disc trays.

IMHO, MS isn't going to release a BR addon, they would have add support for Java to the 360. An addon would be a niche upgrade, that few would take advantage of. MS seems to be investing more of their resources into video streaming. I wouldn't be surprised if MS announces more content streaming partnerships w/ companies like Viacom or HBO.

Thats what I use now. DVDs look great upscaled.

My TV doesn't support VGA 🙁

Is Blu-Ray still worth it if my TV only does 720p/1080i? Either with an Xbox360 add-on drive or a standalone BR player?

Isn't Blu-Ray 1080p?

I was able to grab a few minutes with Aaron Greenberg (BIGVIP) at the end of the day today here at TGS to discuss what we announced and how things are going in Japan. We also (try to) put to bed the rumors about Blu-Ray coming to the Xbox 360 (it?s not.)

Thats what was on Major nelson's website.

It depends, a BR movie down scaled to 720p will look better than a DVD upscaled to 720p, but not by much if you have a good upscaling DVD player.

As a litmus test, try switching between a DVD and a decent HD broadcast (a movie on HBOHD or something), if you notice a significant difference in quality, then get a Blu Ray player.

I don't know where people get this kind of "information" from. I have a 720p/1080i TV at my home, and BR looks fantastic on it. I've compared upscaled DVDs and BR movies (both from my PS3), and there is no comparison. The BR movie looks so much better.

I agree that they look better as well, my point was that many people don't notice that big of a difference, at least not enough to justify buying a new player.

I bet it does. Try a vga to component cable, or try the s-video out of your vga card.

Agreed. Also, MS isn't going to release any additional addons that just further point out the cost advantages of buying a PS3.

*IF* the streaming money has not started rolling in by the next-next-gen release, THEN you will definitely see a BR integrated into the XBox '720'

Microsoft has a surprising amount of institutional experience with Java - Visual J++ coming to mind immediately. I don't think a basic Java interpreter is going to keep them away from BR-D on 360 support by itself. That said, I don't think we'll ever see a BR-D add-on from them - there's just no market to support it unless it was absolutely dirt cheap ($50-$75). At least the HD-DVD add-on had a reasonable niche.

Um...what are you talking about? No market to support it? You mean the only high definition video format available? How did HD-DVD have a niche that BR doesn't?

I was just thinking the same thing. 😕

Yes, it's worth it. When it comes to movies, 1080p is a gimmick, plain and simple.
Films are shot at 24fps, displaying them at 60fps doesn't magically improve the image quality 😉
