The Xbox 360 is like...

Can any one compare the "gaming performance" between a PC an a 360???

And what components will be necessary to outmuscle the 400 dolar machine.

full potential not tapped yet anyhow😛
not something done with pc hardware, u just buy a new video card🙂

xbox 360 cannot be compared be regular coputer games cuz
1. all games are optimized for the console.
2. the resolutions are less than the pc.
3. it cost 400 buxks.

i dare anyone to achive graphics equal to it it a 400 coputer.
they are different. don't try to compare them untill we can run linux on it.

finns14 - is cod2 very good? compared to bf2?

Different type of gameplay very different paced. Much more of a traditional shooter than BF2 I like both but for different reasons.

Resolutions less than PC huh? 1080i is rather high resolution for a mediocre PC to keep up with.

Though it's probably only equal to 1280x720 in 720p mode.

Remember, the 360 is only $300 - at least mine was.

I'm about to boot up Call of Duty 2. I can tell you I just got a 360 yesterday, and NBA 2K6 is graphically amazing and at full frame rate. Nothing I've seen on PC comes close, yet.

Ever hear of a little game called F.E.A.R? Your Xbox360 doesn't do those types of lighting effects yet.

And Quake4 runs much better and at higher resolution on my PC which is about a year and a half old now than the 360.

I'd have to disagree. The 360's GPU seems pretty apt for the lighting in FEAR and the 360 like someone said is capable of 1080i/720p.

I believe the first Xbox was capable of 480p/720p/1080i as well. The resolution is not as big a deal as the fill rate, and the AA/AS, which is supposed to be better but still not compared to a PC..

But if you want to talk about a decent machine for the price, then yes, it's a powerful console which will probably do the job very nicely once they get the bugs worked out. It does have a very powerful CPU and a high quality GPU as well which will push their games for the next 3 or 4 years.

It's hard to compare the GPU with current PCs, but it's an 500mhz ATI chip with 10megs of ram integrated on the die, which is probably close to the r500 generation, but it is a custom chip created specifically for the Xbox 360 so it's not a modified chip.

Technically, the Xbox 360 is better, and the way the games have been made for it will also be superior (except with ports i guess) however, given a few months PCs will be easily as fast as the 360.

Also for anyone willing to compare prices, just think that you need a £2000 HDTV to get any benifit of it over having a standard Xbox... unless you like playing in 640x480. Either way, the price of an equivilent PC should be able to compete quite nicely.

The main technical aspects the 360 wins on are it's 4x FSAA with little to no fps loss, that's certainly a big aspect of it and I believe it uses unified shaders, which is something that PCs will only get with Vista and WGF1. Also despite the fact that I hate PPC chips, it does have 3 of them in there, and the games should be coded to take advantage of them.

1/10 ppl will play the xbox360 at 1080i/720p
i know i wont when i can get my hand on it.
but then again i play COD2 on the xbox and looks great to me. again i dare anyone to find a coputer at $150 that can get graphics in cod2 eqaual to my xbox. price to price the consoles wallop any computer.
(as i my computer below should indicate i only play consoles but thats cuz everytime in the past i have upgraded my comp for gaming something bad happened.)

besides if your point is to play games then consoles server the purpose. as long as something as significant as the 3d/2d diff does not arrive and graphics do not lead to some great gameplay revolution consoles will always be the game-on-a-budget's preference.

if you want to copare the power of xbox360 to a computer then it has a graphic card that is probably a downgraded (or maybe upgraded x1800) x1900. it does have those 48 pipelines. it got 3 i repeat 3 cores and each is capable to 2 threads (think hyperthreading X3).. 512mb ram. i know its low but its all for gaming so quite enough. all games will run optimised on it and as the badly optimised COD2 tells that makes a lot of difference.

hdtv ready lcds are down to 600 now. 26-30" have been on sale regularly these few months. soon they will be even lower with the cut throat competition from those asian companies. its not expensive at all anymore. and theres also the vga adaptor that will let most anyone play in hd. standard pc monitor is a 19" these days, as low as 150 dollars, and good enough for 720p

Output in 1080i is not the same as rendering at 1920x1080, which it does not. It renders games at 1280x720, which is pretty low by PC standards. 1280x1024, 1600x1200, 1920x1080, 1920x1200, etc. are all higher and common for LCDs.

if I buy an HDTV I don't want a 26"...I would need one for my living room...thus bigger...thus definitely more expensive...not to mention COD 2 on my friends 7800 GTX looks 1000x better than on his 360...better FPs and detail...sure he only paid 400$ for his 360 but he can not do half as much stuff as with his PC...

? at 26-30" with a low price its good enough for the den or bedroom where games are played. the arguement is for affordability of hd after all, premium stuff is not wide spread of course. point is that the capability is trickling down. even cheap advent crt tv's are starting to have hd capabilities. $399 for 27" advent http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/productD...ODUCTS&cm_ite=1%20PRODUCT&cm_keycode=4
i'm sure many of you grew up gaming on stuff much worse than this lol🙂

and well, the 7800gtx is pretty much irrelevant when talking about the mainstream.

well I have a 7800 GT (no X) and my Need For Speed: Most Wanted looks and plays better than the 360 demo they had at Best Buy...

thats fine but how many people have premium video cards and the premium computer hardware to back it up, let alone the computer knowledge gleaned from cumalative hours of learning about trouble shooting/tinkering/building bleh bleh blah. its not anywhere near the market of consoles, especially comparing just the high end pc gamers. just look at steam hardware survey results. its autodetected so no lying. http://www.steampowered.com/status/survey.html .4% have a 7800gtx

in the real world the xbox 360 is good as it gets. and no even gamers generally don't drag their pc into the living room to play on the big screen. and cod 2 is a rushed port. the other games that come out on consoles can't be played on pc no matter how much you spend on your video card.

Are you sure it doesn't switch to rendering at 1920x540 when you're in 1080i mode? I can't imagine it would look very good rendering at 1280x720 and scaling it, and it's almost the same number of pixels.

Can you get a $150 PC system (with everything, including case/os/etc.) that can out-game an XBox? No. Can you get a, say, $400-500 system that can blow its friggin' doors off? Yes. The XBox(non-360) is running everything (except a handful of games) at 640x480, no AA, no AF, with absolute crap texture quality compared to the PC. It's built around a modified GeForce3, which is four *full* generations behind today's PC graphics cards. Hook it up to a PC monitor or HDTV and you can see how bad it looks.

(as i my computer below should indicate i only play consoles but thats cuz everytime in the past i have upgraded my comp for gaming something bad happened.)

You'll have to excuse me if I don't take you as an authority in the "PC versus standalone console gaming debate".

The comparison may be done by $$.

The Xbox cost $400 and you can play whatever game came out since, as other folks said, the games are optimized for the console.

With a PC, you have to keep on upgrading your system every two year if one want to play the coolest games and spending tons of money.

Personally, I would sacrifice a relative less resolution for money. I have not got the XBox yet since it is in back order.

Well, I've had a 360 since launch with PGR3, Madden, PDZ, and just got DOA4 (from my sis for xmas) and probably played the console for less then 5 hours. I just can't get hooked, I keep coming back to the pc for COD2, WOW, FEAR, CSS, UT2k4. I haven't even opened DOA4 yet. lol I guess console gaming isn't for me. 🙁

anyhow, you can find some of my 360 pics in the link in my sig.
