or something.

having previously painted fake wood onto an airsoft gun, i was pretty confident that i could apply a similar finish to most objects. then i got bored.

result: woodbox360!

the finish is not quite done, it's far from an exact science and i end up having to do many coats before a final glaze. nothing used but two colors of acrylic paint and a glazing medium.

i'm going to age it and hack up the edges, i think, so in the end it'll have more of a 'driftwood360' look.

also difficult and bulky.

yeah, it looks a lot better without a flash, but my good camera is inop at the moment and the other needs the flash to shoot indoors. the idea is not some bling bling woodgrain, it's literally to make the xbox look like it was carved out of dark, aged wood. it just needs a bit more work. you can apply many layers, and even with just simple brush strokes, the woodgrain effect can be pretty convincing. it's hard starting with a white plastic box, although it being somewhat lightly textured helps.

Uh, yeah, sorry but that just looks like you colored it with a black permanent marker and then smeared feces all over it.

The front needs a bit more work on the wood grain effect the cracks looks pretty cool though. The top on the other hand looks like it will need a few hours more of work for it to look convincing.

That looks awful... The front is even darker than the top, which is very apparent. I wouldn't have posted that picture in public.

I'd also throw the 360 out.

Yeah, I'll wait till the OP gives another, hopefully more impressive, view...

don't forget to work on the sides, bottom, back and top too.

closer to done. finish is a little inconsistent. somewhat satisfied with coloring, and the texture is nice but bloody impossible to capture on a camera.

the effect i'm going for is a more smooth cut surface on top while the faceplace looks more carved. the latter part needs more detail work. will post final pics tommorow.

i know. perhaps the first one was a bit TOO rough to post, but that's how it starts- cover all the white, building some texture and depth with a brush. then you can do a little sanding and switch to applying paint with something smooth and soft; paper towel works fine. you don't want to leave brush marks on the final applications of color. when the colors are good, clear it with a brush. tada, wood(ish).

Second pic definitely looks better.

not by much though, it still looks like someone just smudged a bunch of black paint on the side of a brown painted 360 .. atleast from the angle it does. im betting this is one of those things that just looks a lot nicer in person than in pictures.

I don't see you doing any better. How about the next time that all you're going to do is be an asshat, you just save the energy? The OP said it was far from done, now it looks much better than the it did in the OP, and they say it's still not fully finished.

I think it looks really good, and it's not even finished. The final product should look great. GJ OP. Definitely better than the stock white box.

meh, it's anandtech. people will be critical.

i just thought it was kind of a cool 'process' to mess with, and it's something you can do indoors while you sit on the couch and watch TV- it's just tubes/bottles of thick acrylic paint, which can be diluted with water (but resist it once cured). i've used a total of one paint brush. also tried a foam brush, but found a simple folded paper towel to be better (if a little messier). i sat there and did this at a TV table with other supplies consisting of a paper plate and a cup of water. because i had nothing better to do, and yes, because white xbox's are ugly. especially ones that are so old that they are starting to yellow (might be from heat).

speaking of the heat, i think i fixed that issue by fixing their terrible airflow design. by simply COVERING up most of the vent holes with duct tape, and forcing the fans to draw air in through openings that will actually direct it under the cooling duct and across the heatsinks (why would you put that duct there and then make all kinds of random vent holes right above and below the exhaust fans? terrible engineering).

now instead of the top-right of the console getting hot enough to fry an egg, it's cool to the touch and i can feel significant hot air being exhausted by the stock fans.

and on the look, also realize this is going to sit below my TV, not hang in a museum. from a typical view, people will probably ask how the hell i veneered and/or carved a 360, and that's kinda neat.

I never understood this argument. So because I'm not making movies, videogames, music, playing sports, or acting in a film, I'm not allowed to tell someone their shit sucks?
