The WORST HEADLINE EVER

You do know that is what NASA said, NOT cnn.

"Those are the official odds that NASA has long given."

Oh noes!!!! How dare they print the truth. Damm, liberal media.

I HATE the media. They are a bunch of pricks who would sell their own children to the black market for a story. Can't blame them for all of it though, if Americans would stop reading this crap then they would all be out of jobs.

/emo!!!

but still, thats a pretty bad thing to use as a headline

that's stupid. it lowers confidence in the space program although those odds haven't changed at all from previous flights. possibly improved actually.

Reporter 1 sells child to get Story A, Reporter 2 reports Story B about Reporter 1 selling child...

Blood, death and politics are the media's bread and butter. Everything else is just filler to them.

i would go. i would love to go to space, even if it was the last thing i ever did.

I'm not a fan of CNN nor watch it on a regular basis but I really see nothing wrong with that headline. I have no doubt the astronauts flying in that thing fully realize the risks involved.

Nah if he had anything to do with it the headline would be something like:

Space Shuttle Thread 06/27/06: Evil Bush and thieving corporations conspire to kill astronauts. 1 in 100 chance of dieing a fiery death!

A bit sensationalist, but I don't really see a problem with it. Would you rather they sugar coat it?

I'd prefer that people understand that going into space is dangerous. People have died doing it in the past, and more will die in the future. The astronauts understand and choose to take those risks.

My biggest fear is that we become so risk averse as a society that we don't do these things at all, or more likely the risk aversion stagnates the program and makes it to expensive to continue. I fear the latter is already happening. Sugar coating the truth about the risk will only make the public reaction to an accident that much worse in my opinion.

Regarding the specific issue - it is very unlikely that a foam strike will cause loss of the vehicle on the ascent. But like Columbia, it may make it impossible to re-enter. But this mission is designed to rendevous with ISS, so they can wait it out there if there's a problem.
