the World's Most Influential Person is. . .

As lame as "retarded" as it may seem, I really honestly think this is pretty accurate. In terms of internet culture that then bleeds into "real life" culture, Moot by extension of 4Chan really is influential. When a 4chan meme like duckroll evolves into RickRoll followed by the Macy's Thanksgiving parade rickrolling their audience - that is pretty influential. I was in the local Barnes and Noble and I saw a LOLcats book - that was a 4chan meme that got picked up and spread around. /b/tards dressed up in Guy Fawkes "Anonymous" masks have been protesting Scientology - that sounds like great fun. There is tons of stupid shit like that, so I do think in a sense by Moot creating 4chan there is indeed a significant influence on pop culture.

Undoubtedly, many people will question Moot's worthiness of the title world's most influential person. TIME.com managing editor Josh Tyrangiel says that Moot is no less deserving than previous title-holders Nintendo video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto (2007) and Korean pop star Rain (2006). "I would remind anyone who doubts the results that this is an Internet poll. Doubting the results is kind of the point."

I concur.

Internet fads that get into real life events is quite sad... we use them to make fun of stuff and that should be it. When you see rickrolling at the Macy's T'giving parade, that's just a WTF are you thinking moment - you wonder which 18 year old was behind that planning. It's only starting now - can you not see how newer generations will walk around talking and writing l33t speak EVERYWHERE? So sad.

exactly.

wich is why i think this could be bad for 4chan. the more people that know of the stuff that happens over there the more chance it has of getting in trouble..

I think its amazing how 4chan can organize themselves without any clear leader. Its a very interesting social construct.

lol

Moot denies knowing about any concerted plan by his followers to influence the poll, though TIME.com's technical team did detect and extinguish several attempts to hack the vote.

Guess they missed one... 🙂

Don't worry, Times is just going to put Barrack Obama on the front cover again for the 14th time within a one year span. 😉

"To put the magnitude of the upset in perspective, it's worth noting that everyone Moot beat out actually has a job."

Actually considering the 06 winner, and other things, it makes some sense.
4chan has featured on Fox news.
It's had links to suicide etc attempts with fake stories.
It did the whole Scientology thing which made a bit of an uproar in some places.
Rickrolling. Rick Astley winning the MTV music award thing and being back in the news because of 4chan.

Even if you don't know who moot is, you probably have been aware of something 4chan related, and even your parents might have been.
Obama may talk big, but has he done anything that affects most people? 😛

I find it both funny and disturbing that a bunch of random people have so much control of internet culture. It's like anarchy that actually works.

Reminds me of ants. No real leader, but everybody knows their place and things work out.
