Thanks for my new ringer

I am using the same one. But during the first second or two, you may want to edit out the sound of the microphone tapping on a hard surface. Other than that it is a good recording.

That would be so sweet to set it down on the table of a nice restaurant and then have this big long conversation with it. OMFG. :D

Jeez funny, but not 400 dollars funny.

Well then you could hack your own.

Schmatics:
Once you have the finished product you may want to breeze over the operating manual. Then consider updating the firmware to version 5.

Personaly I would love to have one of these sitting in my Car. Nothing would be cooler than sitting at a red light while dialing on a rotary phone.

nah, more like this
WE 500 phone - $15
junk GSM phone $15
picmicro $4
odds and ends and time ..

cost, like $40

there isn't one, hence the 'hack your own'. rather than put together a kit :)

Seriously, though, I'd likely just use the apropriate preamp (I think old phones use carbon mics, so yes, a preamp would be necessary) to feed an appropriate input into the headset jack, and use an op-amp to buffer the output to an appropriate level.
The trick would be getting your phone to recognize the click-click-click noises as dialing digits. Hacking the keypad may be necessary.

Software can easily identify the rotary noises. I believe that is part of what the firmware on the logic board does (as well as manage the data from the simcard and cell network). And I believe you are correct that old phones did use carbon microphones.

So when you figure all this out, please post it on the anandtech website. I am itching to do it myself.
