Hmm when I was in high school back in 72 there was an article I read at the time stating we would be out of oil reserves to produce gas in about 15 years. Well the only thing that really happened was that the gas prices went up.
Is this a repeat?

atomican: You are a moron. the 15million barrel number was US daily consuption ONLY. I got that from the news yesterday talking about CLinton's plan to use some of the oil reserve. I think that the world will see a major energy crisis in 10-20 years. According to Popular Science, there will still be oil available, it just won't be enough to satisfy demand.

see here:
Old thread about gas consuption/supply

One of the first replies there was also about beans! :)

Seriously though, we need to look more deeply into alternate energy sources. Like solar. A solar array the 1/4 the size of Nevada can power the whole US. Most of the area is actually empy of panels since space is needed to prevent panels castinga shadow on others.

The oil business is cyclic. Remember the cheap oil prices of the last few years? Oil companies slowed investement, stopped drilling, shut in marginal wells and did not invest in new refinery capacity. It has caught up to us now, especially the refinery capacity. There is enough oil in the US right now but the refineries are running at 100% and cannot refine enough.
Gores' releasing of the stratigic oil reserves will not alleviate the situation.

They jsut don't want you to panic!!
Think about it!!
If everybody knew there is not going to be any gas left what would they do?
CHAOS!

etech, no one said anything about that plan being effective or not. We all know (hopefully) why oil prices are high.

<< - About 80 percent of the oil produced today flows from fields that were discovered before 1973, the great majority of which are declining >>

Just wait in 5 years it's going to be 20 $ a gallon!

No No No No NO! Our economy and future is oil dependent. It won't happen if everybody thinks positive. We will never run out. Say that over and over.

Oil prices IN THE US are relatively high. European prices have always been higher! Don't you know jack? I lived in Italy (no natural resources at all) for 5 years. It is was $3+ a liter.

At first, I thought you knew what you were talking about, now, I just ask you to please leave such matters alone.

There is enough gas and other fossil fuels and their derivitives to last for centuries. There are thousands, maybe millions of miles below my house to the center of the earth. My house is standard size, but I don't have a ruler right now, so we'll say 100x100 feet. Now millions of miles x 10000 sq. feet x 2 gallons of oil can be harvested from every 10 square foot on average, that means that each house has enough fuel under it to power everything in the world for about 12 hours. Since there are millions of houses in the world, we'll be fine.

Atomican: I was not talking about Germany, I was talking about Italy. Note the difference? They both have an 'a' and a 'y', but that's it.

Pretender: That's faulty logic. That average is based upon what we have currently found. The depths you are talking about are pure conjecture.

edit: as you so clearly pointed out

We can get oil from whales. Don't worry. Go back to sleep. Atomicman obviously works for the nuclear energy industry.

Let's look at actual numbers from:

world oil stats

world gas stats.

World oil reserves at the end of 1998 was 143,400,000,000 tonnes.
World oil consumption in 1998 was 3,037,500,000 tonnes.

Results unless something has changed dramatically in the last 2 years: ~47 years reserves (45 now).

Natural gas reserves at the end of 1998: 146,390,000,000,000 cubic metres.
Natural gas consumption in 1998: 1,846,700,000,000 cubic metres.

Results: ~79 years reserves (77 now).

This is fossil fuel not only in the ground but proven to be economical to extract at today's prices. If the price increases, there will be more incentive for exploration and we have a lot of undiscovered or currently unprofitable oil in the ground. Moreover, some old wells would be reactivated and refineries constructed. A lot of oil will become available if the polar ice cap melts within the next 10 years.

We do need to change our energy use but there's no need to panic from an exploration-production-consumption point of view yet. Environmental issues are another matter.
