The World and its destruction

The way I see it, man is destroying himself along with the Earth. Over what? Nothing.

We are killing one another over something stupid and yet talking about loving thy neighbor. BS. Absolute BS. We talk about god yet it has no meaning in our lives. At all.

Countries are arming themselves with nuclear weapons to kill countless millions. Over what? Their own security? At the expense of other's security?

Is it possible that our ambitions and personal desires are one of the underlying causes for all this? Is it possible that man's desire to "succeed" is pushing himself towards destruction? Yet even if man is "successful," he is rarely happy. So then why do all of this?

Religion is the root of the problem.. unfortunately there will always be religion since people need it as a security blanket.

Not always religion. Encroachment of government on a person's percieved freedoms, someone having more than another, or just plain don't like each other happens with people and nations.

I'm not sure. I honestly don't know why most of the pissed off countries are so pissed off. The middle east does seem to be mostly pissed off for religious reasons though.

Im not saying there wouldn't still be a lot of issues but religion is the great accelerator of many wars and conflicts.

The West has perfected the art of killing. Let's not isolate regions. The problem is man.

The West is pursuing it's pleasures at the expense of everything. They are pursuing their so-called education to get high paying jobs to create technology, etc. To acquire material goods. That means going to foreign countries and killing the native peoples, etc. The MidEast talks about god yet they are some of the most violent people.

Hypocritical in every way. We are.

Religion is more than picking a team and going to its church or temple on Sundays. But that's what it's been reduced to. Actually, it's always been that way. So therefore, there is no religion.
Just to clarify, religion no longer exists because *you* have redefined the word itself? Umm, okay.

Without religion, people still fight one another. People under Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot died by ten of millions, more than any religious war by far. The deadliest war in America history, the Civil War, was mostly fought by people with the same religion.

So why are we so violent as human beings? Is my desire to accomplish my little thing so great that I must kill you? Is one country's ambition so great that it must wipe out an entire species of animal? Or even kill an entire group of people?

Ideological Certainty is the problem. Religion is just the largest example of that. However, it also exists in the realm of Politics, Nationhood, and other organizations.

That said, certainly North Korea, Al Queda, and other such examples are loose cannons with, some of them, access to truly horrifying tools of destruction, it is still far safer today than it was just a few decades ago during the Cold War. A few Nukes can be recovered from, a few thousand would be truly catastrophic.

World should not be capitalized.

"It's" is a contraction of "it is". "Its" is possessive and is correct in this case.

Yes, its should have been chosen. Just changed it. Thanks. Capitalized "World" seems OK. May not get me a A+ in class or something but it isn't so bad.

People fight for a lot of reasons. Religion is just one of the dumber ones.

It's like I root for the Yankees and you root for the Orioles. Therefore, you are evil and I must acquire weapons in order to kill you. Yet I actually don't really care for the Yankees. It's just that I feel I identify with them. All over a name that I've gotten attached to.

I bet the world actually isn't as bad of a place today as it has been over the ages. But now our normal lives are typically very far removed from violence and destruction. And whenever something like this (talking about the Boston Marathon bombing in this case) happens, it is plastered all over by the media and amplified.

I am not saying the world is exactly a wonderful place on the whole, but that after an event like this, right after things may seem worse than they actually are.

Pretty much this. Wasn't that long ago that civilian casualties were an accepted fact of war, and even legitimate targets. Now we get freaked out if a few are accidentally killed. Society evolves and we've actually grown distanced from violence, not desensitized to it.

As for religion and violence, it's hard to deny that a lot of people have died in its name for what they believe, or more importantly, what they don't. It's too often used as an excuse to legitimize violence.

The longer you live on this planet, the more you realize how bad human beings really are. Oh, sure we may have our good moments here and there. For the most part, they are destructive, evil and will kill another for no reason at all.

Earth is the ghetto of the galaxy, this is why no alien race will visit us. Our destruction won't from an asteroid or major weather event. Scientists will soon create a destructive virus and release it by accident into the wild and in a week, the earth will be free of us.

We can only hope.. then i'll be able to join my family at the sun god.

I am realizing this every day. Inside us all are very, very ugly things. Most of us manage to hide and disguise them. People's fears are often stronger than their violent tendencies so they don't act out.

I think your choice of the word destructive is key here. We were given this planet yet we are trying to make this planet live by our rotten standards. Heck, how can we respect the Earth when we don't respect ourselves and other humans.
