The Witcher 2 on a Radeon HD 4850 1 GB, doable?

So I'm in the market for some new blood and I've been eyeballing The Witcher 2, especially since the new patch came out. Anyway, my graphics card is a lone Radeon HD 4850 with 1 GB memory. Obviously I'm not expecting maximum quality, but would the game be playable at 1920x1200 without looking like crap?

IIRC, the 4850 is around 5770 performance levels, and that probably would be really iffy at 1920x1200. Because it's more of an action-oriented RPG, the low FPS would be a detriment to gameplay.

I'll try and check what resolution I'm playing at sometime tonight, but I'm almost positive it's not 1920x1200. I'm running a 4850 with 512MB.

The 4850 is somewhat below 5770 levels. The 4870 is closer to the 5770 than the 4850, so I guess that makes the 4850 closer to the 5750 more than anything.

Anyway... 1900x1200 is really stretching it. Once you start looking at resolutions larger than 1080p, you're gonna need a nice GPU to accommodate a resolution that big. Not to mention, at high resolutions the amount of VRAM really makes a difference. 512MB is, again, really pushing it.

That's not to say that The Witcher 2 won't run perfectly fine. In fact it almost certainly will. However, you'll definitely have to knock down the settings to around medium.

My 1GB 6950 struggled a bit while running the game on Ultra at 1080p. I'd imagine the 4850 would be seriously chugging at those settings.

Can you run The Witcher 2? Definitely. Can you run it on high settings? No.

I played with Witcher 2 on high @ 720p with my 5750. 1080p was too taxing on the system. I really want 7xxx series to come out 🙁

You won't be able to run it on High settings, but you'll be able to run it fine. There will be some tweaking though to keep the frame rate from dipping. TW2 is remarkably well optimized.

Edit - Wanted to add that my old 4870 512MB handled the game fine at 1920x1200, with most settings on max. Minus Uber-Sampling. It stuttered in a few places and got bogged down in larger fights though. My current 6950 2GB suffers from none of those problems . . . though my E8500/6950 combo still can't do the Uber-Sampling.

With my 4850 512MB on lowish settings at 1440x900, I'm usually between 20-40 fps in the town I'm currently at. I bumped the resolution up to 1920x1200, and that dropped to between about 10-30 fps. Mind, that's just running around town for a minute or two to check.

That's paired with an Athlon 2 X4 @2.9Ghz.

I ran the game @ 1920x1200 on Ultra (no ubersampling) on my 9800 GT just fine. But then again, I prefer image quality over framerates.

Your HD4850 should be sufficient.

i ran with my 5770 @ 1920x1080 on medium and that's about as far as i could push it before it became unacceptable to me.

my gtx260-216 ran it fine at 1080p high was good except for large battles, and medium was perfectly fluid all the time. ubersampling was off of course.
