well, this forum will get you anecdotal evidence at best, and extremely biased and inaccurate responses at worst. DC is not bad. Baltimore is not bad. each has its bad parts (and those bad parts are some of the worst in the country), but on the other hand both cities have extremely affluent areas. DC has some of the best restaurants in the country and Baltimore isn't too shabby either. and without a doubt, most any city will have more culture/entertainment options (art museums, orchestras, bars, specialty shops, plays, etc) than any suburb.

* I currently live in Baltimore and lived just outside of DC for 5 years

Baltimore is garbage. There are parts that are nice, but the problem with Baltimore is that the ghetto is not sectioned off. You can drive through some of the nicest friendliest parts of Baltimore and 2 blocks down be back in the ghetto. The wire is pretty accurate if not worse.

i wasn't aware that ghettos needed to be sectioned off

why dont you take it one step further by fencing them off and turning the neighborhoods into forced labor camps?

If it were legal they would have done it already. The real issue is the people in power do not care to change the situations in these ghettos.

You just described just about every large american city. We like to compound the problem by gutting problem areas and replacing them with expensive condos, "row houses", and other developments. If you actually watch the wire you'd see this happening in season 3. Pretty much what happens in any major city. Cabrini Green in chicago could easily have been the setting for The Wire.
