I have to agree. Now renting The Shield from Netflix and it's good but not in the same league as The Wire.

I think The Sopranos and Dexter rank right up there also, especially after the season finale for Dexter last year!

Dexter is awesome! I didn't like the characters in The Shield and I didn't really get into The Sopranos.

Just started watching this (near end of season 1) and I have to agree that it is a great series. One of the best things about it is that nearly every character is fully formed and more than one dimension, and the writing is top notch. The explanation of why Snot was allowed in the crap games (about five minutes into the first show) was perhaps the best kickoff for any series ever.

When is this going to come to Blu-Ray?

It's not, nor will it be released in widescreen. The producer dude wants to keep the original idea of the show - the 4:3 SD looks more "television-ish", apparently.

Agree with punters here (and 99 per cent of the blogosphere) that this is the best American TV of the past decade, if not longer. Personally I found The Sopranos overblown in comparison, even cartoonish.

That said, as much as I'd like to reimburse David Simon et al, it feels hard paying $90 for SD dvds. However, as JLee suggests, I believe the show was shot in SD; if Blu-ray does eventually become available, it will be upsampled content (like season 1 of Mad Men). Most modern TVs / players / graphics cards can do the upsampling from dvd anyhow...
