I watched The Wire for the first time ever two years ago. I loved it, except for season 2. I nearly stopped watching it during season 2. It just didnt pull me in, but I'm glad I kept going because the remaining three seasons were fantastic.

yup and the wire wasnt even shot in hd- and the sound isnt anything special. the amazing part is the story itself sucks you in, and the acting is good enough to be believeable. people say its long and drags on, but its just like a book. if youre following the whole story, time starts flying by.

problem with Breaking Bad is that you simply don't like anoyone, at all, in the entire series.

it's one thing to give you the anti-hero that you pull for, or even do something crazy--like Breaking Bad--and give you a completely unlikeable antihero like WW that, in the end, you realize you don't care if they live or die at any given moment...but to create an entire ensemble of people you would just rather see dead....that is a major fault imo.

the characters are all very well developed, but generally unlikeable across the board.

....maybe I'm laying it on too strong. I can see an argument for Hank or even Gus's Lieutenant (probably my most liked after 4 seasons--still need to pick up with season 5a); but overall, you are forced to hate the protagonists, dislike the regular good guys that are allied against your protagonist, or even hate the bad guys that are, by virtue, trying to kill your hated protagonists.

it's a tough cookie. I give them props for making an excellent program--it is all written extremely well, shot brilliantly, and paced more or less perfectly, but there is that central emotional detachment that leaves me uninvolved in nearly all episodes as soon as they end.

You don't feel anything for walt (prior to evil at least), jesse, hank, etc..?

They're all characters with depth, good and bad. much like most characters in the wire...

no. all of those characters are stupid. jesse is an idiot, walt is an evil asshole and hank is just a goody goody filler guy that gets tangled up in the story. BORING

I haven't watched Breaking Bad, but this is the way I felt about Nip/Tuck years ago - I quit watching for the same reason - pretty much every character was a scumbag.

I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion.

I only brought BB up in this thread to show the family guy joke, didn't realize it would start another BB vs the Wire argument, which is ridiculous in itself. Who cares which one is better, they are completely different shows, but also two of the best shows ever made. And I don't care which one you think is better, if you think they both don't rank as all-time greats then your opinion is invalid.

I watched a few episodes when it started, so I never became invested. I really liked half-naked Famke and other half-naked hotties. That at least kept me going for a little while. :)

BB does not have that, unfortunately.

they all have depth, they are all well-developed I think; it's just that I find them unlikeable. Especially the first half of season 4, when Hank is being a major c^nt hanging around the house collecting rocks. That is probably what really started to push me away, though he does come around.
