The Wire -- How long until I'm hooked?

I started it yesterday. Only watched 1 episode, but I'm not loving it.

It took me 3 or 4 episodes of Breaking bad to get hooked, and 1 episode of The Shield to get hooked.

Is there something wrong with me?

The Wire is a slow starter, I couldn't tell you how many episodes it will take, but the journey will be well worth it.

Got me to be honest I kept having people tell me long ago it was great, I'm sure it is.

But have never invested the time to watch them myself.

I do recommend Generation Kill as a mini-series, if you've never watched em.

I'm kinda in the same boat, something I've never done and wondering if worth it.

The first season is a little rough.

I just finished season 2 tonight and I can't wait to watch more.

Keep on it. It's really really good.

I enjoyed the stories of the street drug trade and the docks. The schools and politicians and media storylines were a bore. Eventually the whole thing got to be a little repetitious, IMO.

I'm in the middle of finishing it up now. Just started Season 4 earlier today.

Season 1 was OK. Season 2 was mediocre. Season 3 was good, I'm guessing it will be the best unless season 5 rocks it. Season 4, so far, is looking mediocre; only on episode 3, though.

Definitely very overrated IMO.

Season 1 is a little slow. Season 2 has some great parts but is pretty boring in large chunks. The payoff starts with season 3. By season 3 all of the main characters are well developed as well as a lot of the minor ones that recur throughout the series.

Omar, Stringer, Clay Davis are among my favorite characters from the series. Overall I liked the last three seasons the best.

Almost finished with S1. I like it, a well done police show. Seem to remember hearing some of the cast were real-life Baltimore people and not actors.

I thought season 1 was pretty good and maybe the best, season 2 was easily the worst one. After that it gets a little preachy and sometimes weird, but it was still good.

What's up with all the hating on Dexter?

It starts out slowly, stick with it but it's not everyone's cup of tea. The best TV show, ever.

Episode 1 was TERRIBLE. By the 3rd-4th you'll be hooked, although seasons 2-4 are the best IMHO. Very very very good show, and I almost didn't go past episode one because it was so bad.

Comparing Dexter to The Wire? That's like comparing an Etch-A-Sketch to a fully loaded i7 computer. Even season 2 of The Wire, which a lot of people seem to agree is the worse season is still better than the best season of Dexter. I hate TV, I don't own one and can't stand 99.9% of the programming on it. But I re-watch The Wire every year and will continue to do so until I die.

Ahhh, glad this thread showed up. Not going to answer the OP's question but was wondering what people eat when doing their marathon run of The Wire. I used to eat jerk chicken but now I'm thinking of doing something more southern, like crab cakes or crawfish (if I can find it in NYC) or bbq ribs. What say everyone? What is Baltimore known for, food-wise?

I will usually give a show the first season before I make any judgments. There is a lot of story that needs to be laid out and takes time.

I got through two episodes before I gave up. It's not that I'm impatient, I liked breaking bad which was slow moving. After two episodes there was not one character or storyline I gave a crap about. Nothing to reel me in.
