When you RMA(or do an exchange) within 30 days/whatever Newegg's rule is, don't they send you a brand new one?
Of course if you RMA to Seagate, Samsung, Western Digital, or Hitachi then one should expect a refurbished one.

heck, I just RMA'd a 1TB WD Green (WD10EACS - 16mb cache) and got a brand new WD10EADS - 32mb cache in return! Hope it doesn't mess with the Raid 5 array, lol.

I would think using the non-raid WD drives alone would mess with your raid. Did you enable the TLER on the drives or you just deal with random drive droputs?

Ordered two of the WD Black 640GB drives from NewEgg for $50ea, and they were shipped double-boxed, and they were bubble-wrapped inside each box.

I usually order HDD's from Ewiz, and they are always shipped fitted in a foam covering, with rubber bands so they don't come out. Ewiz has good packaging, which is probably why their shipping charges are a little on the high side.

That is how mine came as well. Just opened it.

the sad thing is, you get better packaging by ordering off of someone on ebay then you do from those stores.

Amazon

It was the bare HDD in a sealed anti-static bag, folded into a cardboard sheet as if they were shipping a book. No padding beyond the corrugated cardboard.

what do you expect? they are book sellers, they know how to ship their books ... but no clue how to deal with computer parts. next time get it off newegg and leave the book buying to amazon.

I've ordered a couple of drives from Amazon, and while they weren't packaged the best, it wasn't horrible either. They were wrapped in bubble wrap with some other packing material in a small box. This was a while back though. I would be pissed if they came in a book sleeve.

I finally figured out where the complaints are coming from about Newegg. The people who are complaining about Newegg's packing would consider the packing you described as seriously inadequate. IOW, they're not actually getting different packing, its a difference of opinion or expectation.

They want Newegg to use packing that will suspend the hard drive in some geometric center of the box and prevent it from settling, even if it is wrapped in adequate layer of bubble wrap, so that just in case someone whacks the box with a hammer exactly where the drive would otherwise have settled, the blow from the hammer won't defeat the box, the bubble wrap, and subsequently damage the drive.

I expect the packaging from newegg to be good enough I can use it to send the drive in for rma if needed. If I packaged my stuff I sell on the forums the way newegg does I'd have 300 negative heat.

This was years ago and I think the reseller was insightdirect.com but they actually refused to accept an rma'ed drive if you sent it back in the very same packaging they used to ship it to you in the first place. I learned this when they refused an rma on these grounds. Last time I spent any money there.

Was it shipped UPS or Fedex? Simply curious.

I have to imagine with so many warehouses across the country, shipping methods may very well vary from state to state...Which would explain the haphazard quality in shipping for people in different parts of the country, and even why things appear to improve for a brief period, and then slack afterwards.

Where is a good/the best place to order from then? I need to order some drives and this thread is freaking me out, haha.

I was afraid that would be mentioned, because the drives I was looking at were out of stock. I guess I'll wait anyway. I remember when they were called googlegear :) Thanks.

It appears that if you're getting multiple drives in one order, Newegg might be OK...Emphasis is on "might".
