Those prices never translate directly. There's a reason all the europeans want to hit up the US electronics stores when they come visit.

Even so, that thing shouldn't be selling for >$500, even in the US.

That's priced very competitively. Looking at Amazon UK store, 16GB Wifi only Ipad is £439.00 and 32GB one is £510.00. Compared to that the Xoom looks like a steal.

Doesn't matter how awesome the specs are, it is a fail and will be since they can't match or beat Apple's entry price of 499

Kinda like saying all other PCs are failures because you can buy a 300 dollar Dell.

Different comparison than pc's. This thing will be a failure compared to the ipad because Joe Consumer will see 499 ipad and that will be all she wrote

Well, that and the iPad is a more polished product and a better user experience, overall.

No way would I pay that much for an Android tablet. You can get a full featured laptop for that much money.

I simply can't believe Apple is the price leader, insane times!

Yea the world has officially gone backwards because it's nearing Dec 21 2012. These companies need to learn that they need to price it competitively.

Price discovery is yet to happen on Android side of things, because there aren't many devices out yet. When it does, the prices are going to be very good for consumers, and margins very slim for manufacturers, similar to the PC space. Barrons is predicting a glut of tablets coming. There is going to be a big shakeout to follow, where companies slash prices to cling on to share, so fire sale prices are going to be common until there is some stability established with only the most lean and mean manufacturers remaining in business on small margins.
For now I am getting a Nook Color, because E-readers are already a very competitive market. Down the road, I can see myself getting a WiFi Asus Transformer as both my netbook and tablet, once prices come closer to $400 or below.

Isn't it competitive with the equivalent ipad? Not sure what the problem with it being similarly priced considering the new hardware etc.

Because the better iPad has a very high chance of coming out tomorrow at the same price point as the current one. And it'll very likely be available as soon as next week, too.

Depending on the specs or what Apple announce, it'll look like the closest Android competitor is 50% more expensive than a comparable iPad, and then Motorola could be in for a very tough time ahead. The Galaxy Tab was in the same shoes when it came out at $600, and you can see where it is now.

It's not necessarily a bad thing for consumers since price competition is good, but it's just hard to swallow when it's Apple who is doing it, and some don't like the way Apple handles their business, to put it lightly.

Moto already confirmed $599 US price. What's the point of OP's post? Rest of the world paying more for electronics is not news.

It is pretty pathetic how much of a first mover advantage that Apple is getting when it comes to the tablet space. There has been literally ZERO competition for a year. Pathetic

Its the same thing that happened in the cell phone space. There wasn't a good competitor to the iphone for at least a year.

What the hell is wrong with these other companies? I want more competition, but they all seem to be dragging their feet. Its terrible.

Yes but even as the competition emerges, they still need years to catch up. I really don't get it. Is Apple really pushing that much through their R&D?

Yup, they are. They always seem to get a 24 month drop on everyone. It's insane.

Gotta give them time to make decent competitors. No one wants crap. Like you said, same with the iPhone but competition is here this year. At least this time they're quicker to respond than it was with the iPhone.
