The WHOIS database...the perfect way to stalk someone

I really dislike the way having a domain requires you to publish your address for all to see. I know it's good because it helps stop those who are hosting sites to screw others over. But for some people, it sucks.. all you have to do is get some nutcase who wants to cause you harm, and they can look up your domain and there's your address.

I manage my domains with dotster.com. Isn't there some way to hide my personal info??

don't use real address info. The registrar really only needs a valid email address anyway.

Are you talking about physical address, or email address?

Physical address: just falsify it.
Email address: get a throw-away address to use.

they can choose not to host you if you provide false information... but they don't care enough unless you give them reason to.

or you can come to realize that ultimately you are pretty insignificant and that nobody really cares enough to go through the trouble to stalk you or "cause you harm", let alone IF they were do that that, they probably would just follow you to work or school rather than find out what domain you registered and then do a WHOIS lookup. maybe.

Dude. I may not be an A-list celebrity or anything..but seriously, why make assumptions about who I am and who I know?

stope creating those scam websites and you will not have to worry about someone tracking you down and killing you.

The whole reason I brought it up is because someone I know got an e-mail threat from someone... and they were gonna report it, and my response was forget it..it's just some stupid kid. But then they told me it was very easy for people to get their phys. address from their e-mail address...then I realized of course that people have their own domains & it IS very easy to just do a WHOIS.

Equally easy just to google someone's user name on google too.

Many organizatoins register a generic name, so they can deal with people coming and going. "IBM IP Administration", ipadmin@ibm.com or something like that. It's very common. Make up your own fancy-sounding title. Just be SURE you get the e-mail address pointed somewhere that won't be deleted or you'll be totally screwed.

Simple solution is to use a P.O. Box for situations that require a real mailing address, yet one does not wish to give out their personal address information.
