I'm taking a vacation in Italy/Swtizerland (First Lake Como in Italy and then St. Moritz in Switzerland) and I'm looking at the costs and it's adding up faster than STD's on Paris Hilton.

It'll be well worth it...but I remember vacationing over here where I didn't feel like I got paid in pesos. The more I come to think of it...I'm "cheap" labor over here. In America, people are always complaining about jobs being taken by people from India, Mexico, etc. Now I'm in Europe taking jobs from Europeans because I'm cheap labor. Funny how the world works.

My GF's contract says that when she has to go to europe she gets paid in euros.

She's got that part nailed.

That would be nice. I'm working over here and I still getting paid in dollars...although all of my expenses are paid for and my Per Diem Nearly tripples (at least here in England and when I was in Denmark...Germany only about double).

Of course none of this helps when I'm taking vacation.

Ironically is is really cheap to get over here... I rarely spend more than $500 got fly my wife over here...My company rarely gets tickets at that price to fly me around the US.

Hrmm, I would pay to catch the clap from Hilton. I'd volunteer if it were Portman though :)

I'd switch them over the GBP here...except it's losing ground to the Euro as well. They have it on the ticker here all the time how the Euro is gaining on it...it reminds me of the Candadian Dollar gaining on the US Dollar...quite humerous really.

Pound sterling is still ahead of the dollar, just not as much as the euro is.

The pound is ahead of the euro. It's about 2 dollars to the pound, where the euro is around 1.30-1.150 dollars per euro. I WISH I was living in a country on the euro.

Ireland is way cheaper than England though...at least compared to London. Of course the last time I visited there the Euro was below the dollar (2002)...so who knows what it is like now.

I didn't mean the absolute value...

Over the last two years, GBP is up 8% over the USD, but the euro is up 24%.

Correct...and thus my comment regarding the UK news constantly going on about the Euro catching up to the GBP.

Como = Paradise! Good decision.

And yeah, it sucks! I will be taking two vacations in Europe this summer/fall, and I'm not exactly looking forward to paying for them.

Where you headed to? I'm probably going to be finishing the summer working here in the UK...but I have to be back in the fall for a wedding in Scotland.

Definitely looking forward to Como. Been wanting to go for a really long time and have never gotten around to it. We're driving down from Zurich and spending most of the week in and around Como, and then finishing up the weekend in St. Moritz (my buddy is getting married there)...so it should be a nice relaxing week. Wish I could do more...but I'm in the last two months of an implementation here in the UK so taking more than 1 week is pushing it with all that I need to get done. Plus I want to take a number of weeks off in the fall...so no need to burn too much vacation now.

This year I will be going to Germany in July on business. Afterwards, my GF will meet me in Berlin where we'll spend 3 days before flying down to our favorite Greek island for another 10 days. In October, my best friend and I will fly into Vienna, spend a few days there, then go to Prague, before ending in Munich at the Oktober Fest.
