The watch thread - what watches do you sport or covet?

Watch collecting is a funny thing. When I started out I had a collection that sounds very similar to yours. Lot's of g-shocks, other casio digitals, eco drives, quartz seikos etc. but over time I began to appreciate watches for more than just the time keeping aspect.

Mechanical watches are not overly accurate unless you start spending quite a lot of money a stock standard ETA 2824 movement will get you a positional variance of +/- 30 seconds. In other words if the watch is running 30 seconds fast or slow per day that is within manufacturing tolerances.

My grand seiko runs a spring drive which is a quartz mechanical hybrid. It's still classed as an automatic but that has a positional variance of +/- 1 second per day. ETA and seiko also make high accuracy quartz movements. The seiko 9F series of movements has a variance of +/- 10 seconds per year.

Citizen and seiko are serious watch making companies. Cheaper mass produced watches are their bread and butter but seiko has the grand seiko and credor lines which sell watches that cost up to 500k including minute repeaters and tourbillons. Citizen recently made a 90k tourbillon.

You might find that you begin to appreciate the actual aspects of how the watch was made as well or you might not. 🙂

One of the interesting things that seiko does with their higher end stuff is exercise the Japanese penchant for incorporating nature and art into the watch design.

It's hard to photograph it but the texture on the dial of my GS snowflake actually looks like snow drifts and is based on the snowdrifts around the town of Shiojiri where the Shinshu Watch Studio is located. Which is where the watch was made and part of the main plate of the movement has been shaped to resemble the outline of mount fuji. 🙂

Our watch collections were not that similar, I have nothing in the style of G-Shocks and digitals.

Was that a serious thread? Did you really buy a pocket sundial?

The fact that no one uses a sundial to tell time and the nonsense about the pedal bike generating electricity to power a lightbulb led me to believe it was a parody thread.

Yes, I bought a pocket sundial. It's a compass with a sundial and it's made of pure brass. Quite the cool little device I thought and so I decided to share it. I also bought this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Sundial-Co...517953?hash=item210d90db81:g:ZwoAAOSwKfVXEk2X

How on earth would you think it was a parody thread? Didn't the pictures look like they were my own?

I like vintage/antique type stuff. I have old brass binoculars, old folding opera binoculars, a brass spy glass, and several other things. I collect airline wings, bottle caps, matchbooks, and movie tickets. Practically every single movie I've been to I have its ticket for. Now a days though they've cheaped out and print them on crappy thin paper instead of the nice paper stock that didn't fade. I like brass especially. I have a brass old time scuba helmet on my desk and a small brass hammer with screw drivers in the Handel. I also have a ship's brass lantern key chain. Thinking about buying a brass sundial for the backyard. I wouldn't mind having a ship's brass compass.

So, you’re a hoarder then.

Chronograph heaven. 3 Seikos, 1 Movado, 1 Avi-8, 1 Tissot, 1 Certina DS, 5 Citizens. 3 of the 12 are divers. 3 of the 12 are radio controlled Atomic Time and 1 is GPS controlled Atomic Time.

I had a really nice gold chronograph back in '99. I brought it to Job Corp, left my locker door open (was a small closet) and someone swiped it. They also took my Tom Petty Full Moon Fever cassette. Fuckers.

Here are two watches I have on me right now:

I also have a Submariner and a Patek Nautilus 5711 that I recently sent in for service and probably won't be getting back for many months. Some watches I've owned in the past: AP 15202OR, Rolex GMT Master BLNR "Batman", AP 15300. I was looking for the ceramic Daytona's but they're overpriced right now and a long waitlist at the dealer. I was also debating on the Platinum Daytona instead of the ceramic one but that is quite pricey. I would love to own a grand complication Patek in the future (5970) but for now, I am more into the sports watches.

That's actually a nice Rolex. I think most are average looking.

Another advantage of Quartz movements - they don't need servicing. Oy!

Interesting way to try and sell a watch, list is for $3350, if it doesn't get any bids, raise the price to $5000. Best offer has been an option on both prices.

I'm on the waiting list for a ceramic Daytona. Wait list is supposedly 4+ years though... for a watch that costs $12k. My local authorized Rolex dealer said they only get one per month on average.

I really love this blue angels Eco Drive with internal slide rule, sapphire, chronograph, charge indicator, and radio atomic timekeeping.

However, I must admit that the ugly-as-sin solar atomic G-Shock seems to receive the atomic time signal much more reliably without needing to be in a window.

Skagen chronographs are a nice diversion. The sport citizen movements, of course. Here's a matching set to go with brown or black leather!

Actually, Skagen watches are fun in general!

They even have a solar model or two:

As a man with slender wrists, I have always appreciated their very slim and easy to wear styling.
