I am not into expensive watch but if I ever win the lottery, I would not mind to have a Tag Heuer like this one. Or a classic Rolex would be nice.

Yeah, I was browsing through a lot of pictures of watches because of this thread, just looking to see what I actually like. Unfortunately, I found out that pocket watch is slightly out of my price range at $892,500. 😛 This one is at least doable for me at $1,200, though still more than I've ever spent on a watch:

I miss having a fitness watch (with some basic smartwatch features). I'll probably end up buying another Garmin one of these days. I liked the 735XT a lot, only really sold it a few months ago to buy some more ether (the cryptocurrency, not the magic rejuvenating item or chemical). 😛

They don't hold their value well at all. I couldn't even get a quarter of what I paid for my TAG-Heuer even though it is in near mint condition with box and papers. Most watches fall into this category unfortunately.

Only a very few brands hold their value reasonably well and nearly all of them are in the >$10k category. Basically, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, JLC, Vacheron Constantin, Rolex and maybe some Cartier watches. Everything else you can expect to lose 40-50% of its value as soon as you walk out of the store with it and it will not be easy to sell.

TAG is supposedly making their own movements now but until very recently they have been using ETA movements, which are decent movements, but they aren't made by TAG in house. I'm not sure if they're making their own movements yet or not... haven't really kept up on them.

Well. I have many a watch ranging from crap (I am not sure why I bought it) to hand made. I am thinking about reducing my collection to these three.

The thing with these types of watches is you have to maintain them. My GS has to go back to japan every 5 years or so for servicing and it's not cheap. So I have come to the conclusion that I need to consolidate.

What is the tittle of the thread? Does it say anything about watches as investment/retain value over time? Nope, nada, zip.

Buy what you like and enjoy it.

Want to invest? There are other places to do that.

Very nice collection! I was wondering about service on those watches. Also, how robust are the movements? Will the Glashutte or any of the others take a knock?

Thanks. They should take a knock usually watches like these will be built using various standards (ISO/DIN) one of which will be "survivability". The watches are mechanical though with moving parts and I know from experience if you drop a mechanical from a height of ~5 feet onto a hard surface that's all she wrote.

Servicing isn't cheap. It's at least 1k to have the grand seiko serviced and it has to go back to seiko in japan. The other two I can have serviced in australia but there is only one place that can service those watches. The Sinn has an inert gas filling as well as a copper sulphate capsule so it requires special equipment and the dornblueth has a highly modified eta/unitas 6498 which requires training from the manufacturer in germany to service. 🙂

Still that's the cost of ownership. Just like having to regularly service your car but with watches it's a lot less frequent.

That sounds pretty typical of high end mechanical watches. I’m fortunate that there are a couple highly regarded authorized Rolex service centers in the states. The place I purchased my TAG Heuer says they can service Rolex movements but honestly I don’t think I would let them work on my watch. It will go to an RSC when the time comes, which is every 10 years.

I love that Glashutte, just a beautiful movement and watch.

No, of course not. But there was a point brought up that TAGs are worthless, you implied that the value of one of these watches was commensurate with the retail price. I was just stating that it is not.

There is very little market for a preowned TAG so spending the kind of money they cost new makes very little sense to me personally... and I spent that kind of money. I like the watch but I wouldn’t do it again... definitely not for the kind of money it retails for or even the price I negotiated on the watch I bought, which was $725 less than the retail price including tax.

It’s not smart, but they can be reasonable purchases if you choose wisely. A friend of mine bought a Rolex Submariner around the year 2000, he spent $5000 on it, and he could sell it today for more than he paid for it. It was a better buy than a TAG Heuer would have been. I don’t mean to bash the brand, I like some of their time pieces, but I’m not sure I’d buy another one.

If you could buy a car, drive it for 17 years and sell it for more than you paid for it would you consider that a decent purchase? Granted, the price of gold might have some effect on this but I don’t think buyers are melting down Rolex watches for their gold content.

I sold my Datejust in 2013, bought it in 1994, I sold it for more than I paid, but I didn't buy it new. I am not really a Tag fan either, as I have said before in other threads, its not that I don't like the looks, its just I feel they are a way over priced brand. Here is a new brand I learned a little about today, one on ebay right now, he is asking $2500, which from my limited info is high for a used one, its very nice looking though. Brellum Duobox chrono.

I really like it also, its only listed $300 under what the new ones cost, so not a good deal. I sent him a PM about the watch and his response didn't make sense based on what I asked. I asked about putting up a best offer option and told me to go to FB, here is his response below.
