The War in Iraq could determine if the US draft is reinstated...

I know that it's been mentioned here before, but this is pretty new: Link

We start to have problems if the Iraq occupation is difficult and lengthy and if other allies don?t offer much help ? not an unlikely outcome,? said Andrew Bacevich, the director of the Center for International Relations at Boston University and a former Army officer. ?If there?s a war in Korea, then we will face a massive shortage of personnel. But I would rate a war there as unlikely ? which is not to say impossible.?

So basically if the war in Iraq goes according to plan, then no draft. But... if war with Iraq extends itself past oh say 4-5 months then the draft is possible. And if war with Korea takes place, then that increases the chances that we may have the draft. And it's looking like Korea might just be getting ready for war. Link

Ahh... Now if we do have a draft then all you 18-25 year old loud mouths can either put up or shut up. Ha.. it's easy to talk a big game, but I bet if the US government came knocking on your door most here would go crying to mamma.

Me... We'll I'm past the draft age so if it's reinstated I'll be grinning from ear to ear.

🙂

The draft is not happening. Military force requirements have not even been raised.

I seriously doubt that the draft will be reinstated, but you do have to wonder. We have forces all over the world, and yet were going in war soon. I doubt that it will be much of a war, but you never know.

Saddam is protecting his homeland and has stated that he would rater dies than surrender. So he has nothing to lose. Whats not to say that he conducts chemical warfare and kills off 30,000 American troops. And that doesn't even account for the number of men that would be needed to win the war and we will need a large number of troops to secure Iraq after the war.

Then say North Korea does something unexpected and attacks Souht Korea. Then we need to have man power in that region as well.

Then you have Columbia and Afghanstan. We have troops over there as well.

Our troops are being thinned out. The draft is plausable. Unlikely... yes! but you never know.

🙂

The draft is not happening and unlikely to. Impossible to forsee what would had happen if things go really bad.

I seriously doubt that the draft will reinstated. Anyway, I don't see this "war" with Iraq being any more diffficult than the first Gulf War. All the reports I have seen from Iraqi refugees seems to indicate that the Iraqi people will welcome us with open arms if we can get rid of Saddam. I doubt his troops are loyal enough to fight to the death for Saddam either.....

How is it a good thing?
History has proven time and again that a drafted (or slave) army doesn't stand a chance against an army of volunteers. Draftees are usually only good for cannon fodder.

The draft is probably the single best way to seriously degrade the capabilities of the US military. There are already enough people in uniform who don't want to be, and some people think it's a great idea to enlist millions involuntarily?

Brilliant!

They're not done enlisting the impoverished yet. Hey kids, like to shoot your friends? Now, get paid to shoot people! Join the army!

Do you really mean that you're only going to protest if it comes down to your own life being on the line, but as long as you can sit home in relative safety while others risk their lives, you aren't going to protest?

I can't believe people even think that the draft would get started again. IIRC, The idea of bringing back the draft is ludacris and everyone in the Gov't knows it. Or corse there are those rouge few, but who give a fvck what they think. The draft isn't happening, so I don't know what everyone is getting their panties in a wad for.

No, because it would be incredibly expensive.

Oh, is that why we spend such an enormous amount of money on the forces here in sweden?

Sweden is relatively small. If we had mandatory service for every male when they turn 18, we would probably have a standing army of 20 million at any given time.

If this administration reinstated the draft, they can kiss getting re-elected goodbye.

Don't worry, you will never have to fight for what you believe in, all you have to do is cheer while others die for you... isn't that just great... ?
