so i stumbled upon this:

that's will smith's latest film (the trailer).

now, i actually know people who speak like that. but why cast someone who everyone - worldwide - has familiarity with, and make them do that ridiculous accent?

again, not ridiculous per se, but because we know it's fake.

i can't think of a single actor pulling off a fake accent that wasn't over the top, silly, purposedly exagerated to make a caricature out of a character.

opinions.. go!
BTW, do you like Hugh Jackman's accent in X-Men or Yvonne Strahovski's accent in 24 and Chuck?

Cuz they're both Aussies, doing fake Canadian and US accents respectively.

So all the English actors that speak with an American accent have been over the top?

I'm no fan of Smith, but the clip sounds fine. Complaint is unwarranted.

he was doing OK, I was picking up his character without too much trouble. I think there were a half dozen other actors who could have done the part effectively.

The problem is, what "better" actors have the ticket appeal that Will Smith does? For starters, this movie is going to be terrible. There is no shadow games being played by the NFL to cover up some African doctor's concussion shit that is interesting enough to make an entire movie about. A more believable actor for the lead (as far as being an African doctor) wouldn't get the people in the seats. They need someone with star power that isn't seen as a "bad ass"; by that I mean Idris Elba wouldn't work, because he is intimidating and Don Cheadle wouldn't work because nobody gives a shit about him anymore.

Also, I really hope that was supposed to be an African accent. If it wasn't, it certainly sounded like it.

Vondie Curtis-Hall was who I had in mind.

Someone I had to Google to recognize. That just isn't going to pull in people to watch a movie about something nobody really cares about. People are going to see this trailer and say "Oh, a Will Smith movie! I'll see that."

Ok I get what you are putting down. The movie is going to suck, so it might as well suck hard with Will Smith as the headliner.

This is the big issue.

To attract people en masse to a drama movie like this, you need a recognizable head actor.

The voice accent is not an issue. However, being in a string of shitty movies will end your career.

i think Forest Whitaker would have been a better fit for this role.

Maybe. But Forest Whitaker can't draw an audience the way Will Smith can and producers of movies prefer to cast someone who comes with a big fan base.

Like me, if Clint Eastwood did another 'Dirty Harry' movie featuring an old geezer, ex-cop, who's blowing away bad guys from the comfort of his Lark I'd go see it no matter how bad the premise is.

And feel free to contact me for the licensing rights to my original idea. ()🙂

don't have sound here at work, but no fucking way it can be worse than sam jackson's lisp in the kingsman movie.

It's not.

Yeah, I hated that one.

The Doctor is Nigerian, Will just seems will is trying to go a bit more South Afrikan to me.
