The move will in theory increase the size of the United States, and the area that is to be added is said to be bigger than the size of the California. The only thing stopping this is that a bill needs to be passed by 2-3rds to recognize a United Nations Treaty that deals with the sea.

The U.S. Senate hasn’t ratified the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the treaty under which such claims are adjudicated. Both Sen. Lisa Murkowski and former Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell have argued in favor of ratification.
