The move will in theory increase the size of the United States, and the area that is to be added is said to be bigger than the size of the California. The only thing stopping this is that a bill needs to be passed by 2-3rds to recognize a United Nations Treaty that deals with the sea.

Who cares? What gain do we as civilians get from this?

Well this is a surprise for me. This is worrying if this results in a loss of fishing territory from us up here. This initial proposal wouldn't affect us as far as I can tell, but the as yet unspecified area "off the pacific and atlantic coast" sounds suspish. I hope we'd stand some kind of chance in court against the U.S., especially with the Haida presence here and in Alaska as well, but yet another decades long court case would suck.
If properly implemented this may potenially be a good thing with the Russians looking up there as well, however. But if this is just a bunch of "drill, baby, drill" nonsense or scouring the last dregs of fucking sealife I'm going to be even more pissed off than I usually am with living next door to a mentally unstable, myopic giant.
