The US never did offer Australia the thanks they deserved

I remember when Bush made his first State of the Union Address and he turned towards Blair and said no one has ever been a better friend to the US than England. I remember being personally angry when I heard this becase I recalled reading how willing and early Australia planned to help fight terrorism not only with words but troops ie action as well. And Bush remained silent.

Not our finest hour IMO.

Too bad you don't lose "Post Count" for thread crapping. 🙁

Exactly Jimbo. And I'm not "upset" just dissappointed.

Thread crapping?? Sorry lamer....try the FS/FT forum to bust people on that. This is Off Topic which means you can throw around your opinion, as if it matters to anyone anyways....heh....

Isn't Australia still a part of the UK 😉
Yeah, we should had thanked them, Australia has stuck by us through thick and thin, they even sent troops to Vietnam.

<< We should have thanked them and anyone else who has helped

Yep, I'm extremely grateful to all the friends who were with us after 9/11.

hmmm from the thread title, I thought this was going to be something about WWII. We based a lot in Australia IIRC and a lot of Australians helped us out. People only seem to remember the nuclear bombs when they think about the War in the Pacific, they forget that Japan had conquered nearly down to Australia before we turned them back... and there was much Vietnam-like fighting through the islands in the Pacific.

I agree though, Tex. Somehow we tend to not think of Australia, ever.

<--likes Australia (ex-gf is from there -- wouldn't be my ex if she didn't live across the freakin' world from me 🙁)

[edit]: I guess Australia was probably technically still a part of the Commonwealth back then, but still I think that we should consider them separately from the Brits.

no one has been a better friend to the U.S. than England

Figures, we fight a Revolution, then kiss their butts. 😉

As an American and on behalf of all the people of the United States I would like to thank the people of Australia for their unwavering commitment to destroy terrorism around the world. The United States owes the people of Australia a great debt for their sacrifice to this cause. Thank you and may God bless.

There I thanked them, happy now?

Thats some ego you have if you think you speak for all Americans. 🙂

How about the Aussie's thanking us for keeping the Japs from overrunning them during WWII? We weren't down there playing island hopscotch for fun you know.

Well, I think a better way of offering thanks would be to stop jerking us around with unfair trade practices and dictating national policy as if it were gospel.

i think technically austrailia and a whole slew of other states, including afghanistan, india, pakistan, iran, canada, singapore, etc, are still part of the commonwealth and i think they had a meeting a few days ago. which is why the austrailian ambassador to singapore isn't an ambassador, hes a high commisioner.

Great post. I love it Jimbo! 😉

That is a curious comment. Australia has one of the most protectionist-based economies in SE Asia.
I'm totally lost on the "dictating national policy as if it were gospel" part.

Thanks GermyBoy 🙂

Eh talks cheap. We can show them how grateful we are if and when they face a national crisis...like running out of Fosters🙂

If Tex wants to get upset over what he feels is a slight towards Australia it's his right. It just seems a little odd that he should be bothered by something the supposed offened party is not.

He doesn't like the U S, just like every other male in Australia, because every time a U S warship pulls into Australia they can't find their wives, girlfriends and sisters for the entire week we are there.

Damn, man, that's cold. 😉

Probably not far from the truth🙂

I don't really see this as a sleight. He just said that the United States had never had a better friend than England, not that they were our best friend. As a practical matter England is a significantly mightier nation economically and politically than Australia, so their friendship carries more weight. None of this implies anything wrong with Australia, or any lack of allegiance to them.

Thats why its IMO. I simply feel they got shafted when the US was dishing out praise after September 11th.
