The urge to buy a PS3 is strong...

Our CC is going out of business and the 80GB PS3's are $320. I thought about picking one up, but I'd want to buy an extra controller, plus a game, plus a BD movie, and even then I don't know what I'd be doing with the thing after the initial coolness wore off...

is it possible to stream 1080p movies from Netflix or anything across it?

the urge us strong because it's still one of the best bd players out there, along with the ability to play ps3/2 games, act as a media server, and load unix onto it.

Not if he's buying a new one from CC, unfortunately 🙁

I don't think the 80GB or 160GB PS3 bundles include BC anymore. The last was the 80GB MGS4 bundle and it wasn't even full BC. Outside of playing something exclusive to the PS3, there really isn't any incentive to buy one. If this would be your only gaming system, then it might be a decent buy, but if you already have a 360, I'd pass.

There are a few good BD players under $300 now.

PlayOn will allow you to stream Netflix, Hulu, CBS, YouTube, CNN, ESPN (and others) to your TV through your PS3. Also works with Xbox 360, HP Mediasmart TV, and a variety of set top boxes.

If you arent going to play games on it then its a waste of $$$$. If you primarily want a BD player you can get one for much less than 320.

that's the problem, i'm not sure i'd be into playing games on it much. I have a wii and an original xbox with XBMC on it, but I primarily play TF2 or L4D on my computer

Soooooooo then whats the point of buying the PS3 then you dumb hick?

And whats a BD movie? You mean BluRay? Or is that short for "BluRay Disk"?

Eh. I bought one but haven't done anything with it. Meaning, no playing games, or watching movies on it. It's just collecting dust. Ugh.

Uh, I don't think name calling is necessary.

You've never heard a Blu-ray Disc called a 'BD' before? 😕

EDIT: OP, from your second post, it doesn't sound like you'd benefit from a PS3. Save your money for PC games and a stand-alone BD player.

Well, I'm one of those who plunged in and bought a PS3 just recently. I have to say it is an amazing piece of hardware. I put a 320gb hard drive in there and loaded up some divx and mp3s and they play flawlessly. I put playon and tversity on my home pc and now I have access to streaming content such as netflix, podcasts, hulu, etc.

My goal was to have a clean looking entertainment setup. And a Panasonic Viera plasma + PS3 looks space age together. I really only bought the ps3 for my wife since she wanted rockband.

The PS3 is a great media server, they should really add a tv tuner to it though. The XMB (cross media bar) is a great interface and very intuitive. To sum it up, everything simply works. Wifi, blu-ray, hdmi out of the box makes it very versatile and they are constantly upgrading it's features.

If you are on the fence and don't "NEED" one right now, I'd just wait for the April price drop.

PS3 + Gaming rig are all I need.

If you have netflix for blu-ray it's one of the best blu players and a very good upscaling DVD players as well.

You no longer get PS2 compatibility, just PS1.

There's now a large library of good games for it, but most are multi-platform. If you have a 360 you won't find too many PS3 exclusives to buy.

There's allegedly going to be another price drop in April, so you could wait. Also, if you don't mind signing up for another credit card you can get $150 off instead of $80 off at SonyStyle.com. If that offer's still on in April it could mean a PS3 for $200 ($350 less 150).

link to this price drop?
is it a rumor or confirmed?

The April price drop is still a rumor, but only a sake-soaked Kaz is saying the PS3 is "officially the leader" so once they sober him up it seems inevitable.

The price drop is purely rumor and speculation. Sony denies it, but they will deny it up until the very point they announce it. Meaning, NOBODY KNOWS but Sony. If you think Sony will say, see sentence #2.

Don't make your purchasing decision of the PS3 based on a supposed price drop 2-3 months from now. But I agree with others, doesn't sound like you'll get too much use out of a PS3.

Load linux on it, and get a usb tv tuner?

True, that is an option, but how many people would go to that extent. And you are still not getting full access to the cell...right?

What others? Those six are the only ones.

I have both a 360 and a PS3 and the PS3 gets the most use out of me. I am now only buying Blu Ray movies/tv shows and I play most games on my PS3. It also seems to be a quieter and sleeker console than the 360. Yes, it costs more, but if you buy it, you'll know where the money went.

Hell, I hardly use my 360 aside from playing Guitar Hero II (which isn't available on the PS3). If I didn't get my 360 for ~$100 new, I wouldn't have bought it.

I went with a PS3 because soooo many XBOX exclusives come to PC while few if any PS exclusives ever do. So if you've got a decent gaming rig I would go for it. I might pick up a 360 some day when it reaches PS2 status to play some of it's exclusive JRPGs on the cheap.
