The upside of moving back into your parents' basement

From the information in the article, it sounds like the guy and his wife were living somewhat beyond their means (motorcycle and 3 cars with only a fast food job).

Good for them to sell off some unnecessary items and pare down their debt. Also, I don't doubt that it could be fun at times to live with your parents or in-laws, especially if it's a truly symbiotic relationship. It seems the guy does help out a fair bit (cutting the lawn, computer troubleshooting etc.)

I actually did something similar about 9 months ago. I returned from Europe, jobless and without much money. I stayed in a basement suite at my godparents' place for a few months while I found a career job and a new place to live (The only alternative was a single room at my parents' house - not a great option).

I took a basic admin job to pay for groceries, etc. and I helped out with chores around the house. I lived essentially separately from my godparents and their sons, although I did hang out with them occasionally. I enjoyed it for what it was, and now I'm back in my own place with a good job and my finances in good shape.

I wouldn't mind. My parents has a cozy basement, and my mom was like a 50's TV mom (wore dresses, pearls, cooked up a storm, very agreeable). However, my dad was just like the dad from Christmas Story, so there was a balance.

I think I would do it when we are between houses... no sense in rushing to find a new house after selling our old one (which may take a while - 2 mortgages would be bad).
