The Ups & Downs Of Parenthood

I have a 7 month old son. And earlier this week he learned how to crawl. Not only am I brimming with pride at this accomplishment (I think you have to be a parent to understand that), but I am happy for him as he is now having infinitely more fun playing. He finds his new found mobility to be so exciting that he justs screams with glee when he has scooted accross the room - no end of fun to watch.

So, it's all good, right? Not exactly.

The down side to the boy discovering how much fun there is to be had in the world is that he has woken up at 3am every day this week wanting to play. This has been a complete nightmare, and my wife and I are complete zombies. Ah well, on balance, I have to say that the good outweighs the bad.

Earlier if they are girls.

My 1 year old daughter just started to do this thing where she folds her arms and pouts when she doesn't get her way. My wife and I feel bad because we can't help but bust out laughing when she does it because it is so cute. I haven't been able to capture it on camera yet though.

And OP, I'm on my 2nd so I know how it goes with the babies waking up early in the AM and wanting to play. That won't stop until they are about 18-24 months old.

From what I have seen, it is the true test of one's parenting skills. While ALL 2-3 year olds are going to have tantrums, the good parents manage their children and control their behavior and the bad ones give in and create a nightmarish world for themselves and everyone around them.

And I'm not even there yet, but the pre-teen stuff can be not good.

Just be glad that he's not autistic.

My 5 year old is and she still wakes up anywhere between 3 and 5 in the morning and plays in her room, the problem is when she plays she screams and yells because she's happy.

My wife is going through the same phase. She wants another baby even after all the troubles we had getting the first two here (we almost lost both). I told her neither her body or I could take another pregnancy. No way in hell am I going to put us through that again.

Well let me tell you right now that 2 kids are not double the work....it's quadruple. Their powers somehow refract off each other.

My son walked at around 9 months. Don't remember when exactly, but I have it dated on tape... He was eager to exercise his legs / walk up stairs (assisted of course), etc,. from as soon as he was able to. He never really crawled. The advice I got from when he started walking, from a friend with kids, was "push him down". Heh, not bad advice.

He wasn't really stable in walking / trotting / whatever until around 1 1/2 years. This is a pretty long time to be chasing your kid, bending over to keep him stable, thinking OMG, he might bruise his knees, bump his head on the ground, etc. (all of which we did of course...).

What I found helpful (although it looks coarse / barbaric / whatever to those who don't have the experience) was a child harness. Yep, a leash for kids. It's way better for your back than bending over to catch them. And you can respond far faster with your hand and leash than with your whole body. Just a suggestion for when the time comes.

I have a 4 month old boy. He is big. About 18 pounds and over 27 inches long. We are still waiting on him to rollover and stay sitting up on his own. It doesn't help that he is so big. It is amazing watching how they change so much every day.

heh yeap. i have a 4yr old and a 1month old.

i forgot how little sleep a parent gets with a newborn. but i am getting used to only 5 hours sleep agian heh.

i agree with you on them getting to be more fun as they get older. wait until the kid hits 3-4yrs old. going for walks/bike rides with my daughter is fun. also she will sit with me and watch some football. when i get mad at them or cheer she does to. not knowing why but its still neat.

We have a talking Elmo doll and my wife got upset when I programmed in that my son's favorite animal is an Eagle and that his favorite color is green. We have 2 dogs and she was annoyed that I didn't set it to dog... :laugh:
I haven't gotten him to WATCH football yet, but he already has a favorite team...

Yeah the Boppy is like the swiss army knife for babies. It is useful for just about everything.

With our first, my wife kept saying she wanted a girl she wanted a girl she wanted girl. We got a boy.

With our second, my wife kept saying she wanted a boy she wanted a boy she wanted a boy. We got a girl.

I'm not particularly looking forward to the pre-teen to teen years. :laugh:
