The unveiling of Tive Series 3 HD DVR happens next month

what makes you say that? I'm curious.
More and more people are just getting DVR's from the cable company and putting up with the inferior interface because it's a lot cheaper. The cable company will rent one to you for ~$5-10/mo, when the cheapest Tivo option is $12.95/mo, plus you've got to buy the box. The cable company DVR is usually HD. To get a HD Tivo, you need to spend $800 for the box, then $13/mo, plus lease at least one Cablecard from your cable company.

I've seen this "it's too expensive, I'll just rent the cable company's" mentality cropping up in a lot of Tivo threads lately and it doesn't bode well for Tivo's hardware division. The software division will probably live on through deals with cable companies where you can download the Tivo software to your Cableco DVR.

You can also order the Series 3 right now:

meh - tivo's are a dying breed...

what makes you say that? I'm curious.

several things...And i mean tivo's as a brand, NOT the DVR that everyone assumes is a Tivo(much like everyone says xerox when they're making a copy)

For one reason - http://www.blackmagic-design.com/press/detail.asp?pressID=88.

For another, many people just use their cable/satellite (sorry Dish 🙁) provided DVR, why pay $900 when you can get one for a few extra $ per month?

and heck at $900 i can build a SWEET media server with the card above, AND have more storage capacity, or at the very least the potential for it....

Tivo's are overpriced, underfeatured - its a shame replayTV didnt get a bigger market share, they had a great product.

Tivo wont die, they will just sue people for money. When companies cannot innovate, they start suing.

lol so true...no big deal tho, dish will come back with new DVR software and all will be good.

Also, with current-gen cable cards, you can't use On Demand with a Tivo - that alone is enough to deter me.
